Juni 1953 löste in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland unterschiedliche Reaktionen aus. Bereits am 1. Juli 1953 fand im Bundestag eine Besprechung statt, wie der Aufstand zu deuten sei. Schließlich wurde der 17. Juni im Westen Deutschlands zum Feiertag, Tag der deutschen Einheit" erklärt. Der Name, Tag der deutschen Einheit" wurde von Herbert Wehner geprägt. Das Entstehen dieses Feiertages war einzigartig, weil ein Ereignis, dass im anderen Teil Deutschlands stattfand, zum Anlaß eines nationalen Feiertages der Bundesrepublik wurde. In dieser Arbeit geht es um die Verbindung von Geschichte und Politik, denn folgt man Edgar Wolfrum, kann, Geschichte zu einer Mobilisierungsressource im politischen Kampf um Masseneinfluß und Macht werden: Sie vermag gemeinsame Bezüge zwischen diffusen Gruppen zu schaffen; mit ihr läßt sich kollektive Identität stiften und in politische Legitimation ummünzen."1 Es wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie die politischen Eliten Westdeutschlands mit dem 17. Juni umgegangen sind, welche Interpretationsmuster sie erarbeitet und in welchem Zusammenhang ihre Deutung der Ereignisse mit dem Interesse ihres jeweiligen Parteiprogramms gestanden haben. Zu diesem Zweck ist es nicht unerheblich die Ereignisgeschichte des Aufstandes zu beleuchten und historischen Arbeiten nach Urhebern und Zielen der Aufständischen zu befragen. Denn gerade die Frage nach den Beteiligten des Aufstandes und deren Absichten wurde in der politischen Diskussion durch die Parteien je unterschiedlich beantwortet.
