There has been a tendency amongst scholars to view Switzerland as a unique case, and comparative scholarship on the radical right has therefore shown little interest in the country. Yet, as the author convincingly argues, there is little justification for maintaining the notion of Swiss exceptionalism, and excluding the Swiss radical right from cross-national research. His book presents the first comprehensive study of the development of the radical right in Switzerland since the end of the Second World War and therefore fills a significant gap in our knowledge. It examines the role that parties and political entrepreneurs of the populist right, intellectuals and publications of the New Right, as well as propagandists and militant groups of the extreme right assume in Swiss politics and society. The author shows that post-war Switzerland has had an electorally and discursively important radical right since the 1960s that has exhibited continuity and persistence in its organizations and activities. Recently, this has resulted in the consolidation of a diverse Swiss radical right that is now established at various levels within the political and public arena. Damir Skenderovic is Associate Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Fribourg. Previously, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for European Studies at New York University. His recent publications focus on the radical right, identity politics, migration, and 1968 in Western Europe, with a particular emphasis on Switzerland.

Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbH Über den Autor: 1866 in Culm in Westpreußen als ältestes von 14 Kindern eines Gymnasiallehrers geboren, macht Hermann Löns 1887 nach der Versetzung seines Vaters in Münster das Abitur. Das anschließende Medizinstudium in Greifswald und Göttingen bricht er 1890 ab. Sein exzessiver Alkoholkonsum führt zum Zerwürfnis mit den Eltern. Erste journalistische Anstellungen in Kaiserslautern und Gera verliert er aus demselben Grunde. 1893 nimmt er die zunächst freie Tätigkeit für den Hannoverschen Anzeiger auf, dessen Chefredakteur er später wird. Hermann Löns entwickelt eine tiefe Leidenschaft für die Lüneburger Heide. Ab 1900 entstehen erste Gedichte, von denen viele vertont werden. Nach dem Scheitern seiner ersten Ehe heiratet er Lisa Hausmann, deren Vater der bereits verstorbene bekannte Maler Gustav Hausmann ist. Dadurch erhält Löns Zugang zu höheren Gesellschaftskreisen und erwirbt sich mit seiner Vorliebe für weiße Anzüge den Ruf eines Dandys. Seine Satiren unter dem Pseudonym »Fritz von der Leine« sind sehr populär und machen ihn zu einem bekannten Journalisten. 1909 verliebt er sich in die 20 Jahre jüngere Cousine seiner Ehefrau. Seine Vorstellung einer Ménage à trois mit Ehefrau und Geliebter weisen die Damen allerdings zurück. Löns erleidet einen Nervenzusammenbruch, der wohl in Zusammenhang mit seinem Alkoholmissbrauch steht und verbringt mehrere Monate in einem Sanatorium in Bad Zwischenahn. Nachdem seine Frau Lisa ihn verlässt, reist er ziellos umher, bis er 1912 in der 24 Jahre jüngeren Ernestine Sassenberg eine neue Lebensgefährtin findet. Inzwischen zu einem erfolgreichen Schriftsteller geworden, meldet sich der 48-Jährige kurz nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs als Kriegsfreiwilliger. Nur durch einflussreiche Fürsprache wird er trotz seiner labilen Gesundheit als Infanterist angenommen. Einen Monat später fällt Hermann Löns am 26. September in der Marneschlacht.
