I BOOKS I AND II The will to power is a prominent concept in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. The will to power describes what Nietzsche may have believed to be the main driving force in humans - achievement, ambition, and the striving to reach the highest possible position in life. These are all manifestations of the will to power; however, the concept was never systematically defined in Nietzsche's work, leaving its interpretation open to debate. Alfred Adler incorporated the will to power into his individual psychology. This can be contrasted to the other Viennese schools of psychotherapy: Sigmund Freud's pleasure principle (will to pleasure) and Viktor Frankl's logotherapy. Each of these schools advocates and teaches a very different essential driving force in human beings. Throughout the 1880s, in his notebooks, Nietzsche also developed an equally elusive theory of the "eternal recurrence of the same" and much speculation on the physical possibility of this idea and the mechanics of its actualization recur in his later notebooks. Here, the will to power as a potential physics is integrated with the postulated eternal recurrence. Taken literally as a theory for how things are, Nietzsche appears to imagine a physical universe of perpetual struggle and force that repeatedly completes its cycle and returns to the beginning.

Jahrhunderts, Note: 2,0, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Institut für Philosophie), Veranstaltung: Macht und Gewalt, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In dieser Hausarbeit findet sich der Versuch Nietzsches Verständnis vom Willen zur Macht darzustellen, d.h. es soll verdeutlicht werden, was der Wille zur Macht ist und wie er wirkt. Bei meiner Literaturrecherche stellte sich aber die Frage, anhand welcher Texte bzw. Aphorismen ich diese Interpretation durchführen sollte, denn Nietzsche stellt sein Konzept des Willens zur Macht in diversen Werken vor bzw. erwähnt dieses in kurzen Abhandlungen. Die Auswahl wurde zudem erschwert durch den Umstand der Nachlass-Problematik. Dabei handelt es sich um die Frage inwieweit Nietzsches unveröffentlichte Aufzeichnungen zu dem Verständnis des Willens zur Macht beitragen oder ob diese gar das eigentliche Verständnis des Willens zur Macht bilden. Eingeleitet wurde dieser Streit um die Relevanz des Nachlasses durch die Publikation der «Groß-Oktav-Ausgabe» in der das Buch mit dem Titel «Der Wille zur Macht» enthalten ist. Dieses Buch wurde editorisch aus den nachgelassenen, nicht veröffentlichten Aufzeichnungen Nietzsches zusammengestellt und wurde als Nietzsches philosophisches Hauptwerk postuliert. Die Wirkung dieses Buches hallt in der Nietzsche-Forschung bis heute nach. Eine allumfassende Analyse schien im Rahmen einer Hausarbeit nicht möglich, daher beschränke ich die Ausführungen über den Willen zur Macht auf das veröffentlichte Werk «Also sprach Zarathustra», was meiner Meinung nach einen guten Einblick in das Verständnis des Willens zur Macht gibt. Ich würde sogar soweit gehen zu behaupten, dass es «zureichend» ist, d.h. Nietzsche hat in dem von ihm veröffentlichen Werk ein in sich geschlossenes, stimmiges Konzept des Willens zur Macht dargestellt. Die Frage ob der Nachlass, wie K. Schlechta behauptet, keine neuen Facetten oder Wesenszüge des Willens zur Macht eröffnet, muss ich als unbeantwortet stehen lassen, denn Ziel dieser Hausarbeit ist der Versuch einer Interpretation des Willens zur Macht auf der Textgrundlage des veröffentlichten Werkes «Also sprach Zarathustra» und nicht ein Versuch zur Beilegung des Streites um die Legitimität des Nachlasses.
