Anti-Fascism, Gender, and International Communism provides a comprehensive history of the Comite mondial des femmes contre la guerre et le fascisme (CMF), an international women’s organisation concerned with confronting the impact of fascism on women and children across the globe. Women played an essential role in the international struggle against fascism during the interwar period, although a focus on the efforts of men and political figures by the historiography has largely overshadowed women’s interventions against right-wing dictatorships. Through an examination of the committee’s key figures, strategies, connections, and campaigns, this book offers a significant contribution to the histories of both women’s activism and anti-fascist activism by positioning the CMF as an important contributor to international political advocacy in the interwar period. Further, the group’s association with international communism and the burgeoning Popular Front movement placed the CMF at the forefront of global debates about the threat posed by fascism and imperialism. This book explores how the professional women activists and the working-class women who populated the organisation developed a committee which advocated for women on a global scale. It charts how the CMF utilised a variety of physical spaces and literary formats to co-ordinate anti-fascist actions through its expansive and ambitious campaigns. The author also demonstrates the close connections between the Communist International and the CMF as a communist front organisation, to provide context for the group’s decision-making and prioritisation of certain campaigns over others. The Belgian photonovel is the missing link in the amazing history of the photonovel, a comics-inspired form of visual narrative that combines elements from very different genres and media, ranging from literary melodrama, cinema, and of course comics. This monograph discloses the specific Belgian contribution to the genre, in close connection with the singularities of the Belgian women’s and general magazines where these photonovels appeared. If the photonovel is generally considered a typically French or Italian genre, this study demonstrates the importance of a different tradition, which appropriated the foreign models in a very original way. Belgian photonovels are distinct, not only because they tell other kinds of stories, but also because they interact with other types of magazines in ways that are very different from the mainstream forms of the genre in Italy and France. Finally, this lavishly illustrated study is also the first in scrutinizing the technical aspects of magazine printing techniques in the development of the photonovel.

À la fois maîtresse de maison et princesse à bord, l'hôtesse de l'air va personnifier une compagnie aérienne et un pays. En Belgique, dès 1946, ces premières femmes à entrer en nombre dans le monde de l'aviation depuis peu civile le font par leurs qualités « naturellement » féminines. C'est leur féminité qui est érigée en qualité professionnelle. Au sein de la Sabena, le faste des année '50 va laisser place aux revendications des années '60. Ces femmes jeunes, célibataires et sans enfants, clauses prévues par leur contrat, vont réclamer l'égalité de carrière avec leurs collègues stewards. Elles s'organisent en une union professionnelle spécifiquement féminine : la Belgian Corporation of Flying Hostesses. Ce faisant, elles écrivent tant une page de l'histoire du féminisme en Belgique que du droit européen en matière d'égalité des traitements. Du mythe à la lutte féministe, se pose en filigrane la question de la construction d'un éternel féminin à l'intérieur de la profession. À PROPOS DE L'AUTEURE Vanessa D'Hooghe est licenciée et doctorante en histoire contemporaine de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles. Spécialisée en histoire du genre, ses recherches portent sur l'histoire des modèles de féminité et de masculinité dans les années 1960 et 1970 en Belgique et en France.
