"This book offers a comprehensive guide to descriptive bibliography--the activity of describing books as physical objects. The function of descriptive bibliography is to provide detailed historical accounts of the varied material forms in which texts have been transmitted and to show the relationships among those examples that claim to carry texts of the same work. The first part of this book contains five essays on general topics: an introduction to the field and its history; its relation to library cataloguing; the concept of ideal copy; the meanings of edition, impression, issue, and state; and tolerances in reporting details. The second part covers more specific subjects: transcription and collation; format; paper; typography and layout; typesetting and presswork; non-letterpress material; publishers' bindings, endpapers, and jackets; and overall arrangement. At the end is an appendix containing a sample description with detailed commentary, followed by a record of the literature of descriptive bibliography"--

Gilbert Sorrentino written by William McPheron and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Fiction categories.

The trajectory of Gilbert Sorrentino's literary life can be tracked in this bibliography, from his first short story in a 1956 issue of his college literary magazine, through his involvement with the New York publishing scene in the 1960s and 1970s, and finally into the 1980s and early 1990, when his work, as at the beginning, once again is being published by small presses. The bibliography treats writings both by and about Sorrentino, uniting in one volume exhaustive descriptive analyses of primary works with annotated treatment of secondary sources. It thereby serves the needs not only of scholars and collectors interested in the physical production of Sorrentino's books but also of literary critics concerned with matters of reception and interpretation.

This bibliography clarifies the circumstances regarding the publication, marketing and distribution (in private, pirated, expurgated, trade and mass-market, hard- and soft-bound editions) of D. H. Lawrence's controversial novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover. Prefixed to the descriptions of each edition are introductory essays designed to both elucidate the novel's long and interesting publication history and indicate the social settings which conditioned its production and reception. The bibliographical listings classify the various printings into editions, impressions, issues and states. The work attempts to describe all appearances of the novel in English in book form whether in pirated, expurgated, continental, or decensored editions, and regardless of format. Introductory essays discuss such matters as distribution of piracies, strategy of expurgations, the 1959 Chatterley Sweepstakes, the Swedish, Paris, and Japanese editions, and the advertising tactics of the paperback publishers. The work therefore attempts a popular history of the novel. It incorporates information obtained through interviews with booksellers, writers, literary agents, and publishers and reproduces title pages, bindings, and illustrations. Special attention is given to the parodies and sequels, which exemplify the shrewdness of publishers from Samuel Roth to Lyle Stuart in exploiting the complex relationships between serious literature, popular pornography and pulp romance. Such details give evidence of the audience for which a particular volume was intended. While a standard bibliography of D. H. Lawrence does exist, no book has as yet offered as much detail on volumes containing the text of Lady Chatterley's Lover, nor has any attempted to capture the lengthy publishing history of Lawrence's pariah novel.

That book, A Gent from Bear Creek, is the holy grail for Howard collectors--only 12 original copies are known to exist. This invaluable resource for Howard collectors has information for every known published work. Initial chapters provide a biography, discuss Howard's literary legacy, and give basic tips about book collecting and selling. The main body of the work is a bibliography of Howard's published works from 1925 through 2005. A thorough index locates the publication of every Howard story or poem.
