En la mañana del jueves 31 de marzo de 1983, Popayán fue sacudida por uno de los terremotos más fuertes de su historia: 200 personas aproximadamente murieron, 1500 resultaron heridas, el 72% de las construcciones tradicionales sufrieron averías muy graves y una cuarta parte de los pobladores se quedó sin hogar, según reportes oficiales de la Unesco. En medio de estas circunstancias, las mujeres jugaron un papel fundamental. También fueron ellas las que se tomaron las tierras, lucharon, marcharon, gritaron, resistieron, se enfrentaron a la fuerza pública, cuidaron de sus hijos y su familiar, sacaron arena de los ríos, cargaron ladrillos, bultos de cemento, negociaron con autoridades locales y nacionales y aprendieron a construir sus propias casas ladrillo a ladrillo. Su historia, sin embargo, poco o nada se ha narrado, Desde las grietas del 83. Luchas barriales femininas, surge como una apuesta por visibilizar las contiendas y resistencias de las mujeres de los barrios populares, que fueron parte importante en la reorganización urbana de Popayán en la década de 1980. Es desde sus ojos que se aportarán nuevas líneas a la narración histórica de la ciudad y al fortalecimiento de la memoria urbana popular. --
