Rancho Mirage is a beautiful residential and desert-resort community nestled along the Santa Rosa Mountains, located between the cities of Palm Springs and Palm Desert in the Coachella Valley. Bighorn sheep and the Agua Caliente tribe of Cahuilla Indians were the areas early inhabitants. Date farms and ranchos developed after aquifers were discovered. Guest ranches soon followed and became favorite destinations for the rich and famous in the 1940s and 1950s. By the early 1950s, residential communities designed in classic Desert Modern style were being constructed along with the valleys first two country clubs with 18-hole golf courses. Rancho Mirage soon emerged as the golf capital of the world and has since grown to be a premier resort and residential community with a permanent population of 16,870 and several thousand additional winter residents who enjoy the citys 10 country clubs, three world-class resorts, and scores of restaurants.

In a remote region just beyond the borders of New Mexico lies an expanse of earth where nothing seems to grow but dust and dirt. Like a barren battlefield, life of any form has long been scorched into retreat. The ironed desert dunes lay cracked and parched. A lone cactus extends twenty or thirty feet skyward; beneath it, and sharply etched by the morning sun lays the only shade for miles. In the distance the first fingers of dawn appear to clutch the horizon. Sunrise brings color and texture to the land. Blazing a trail of dust down interstate 10 four wheels and beat up Detroit steel coast into town on a thirsty gauge. The streets are empty, except for the wind. It's just another no-name town on the edge of nowhere. Across the street there's a bar offering cheap breakfast. Suddenly his stomach feels like the gas tank. He steps out. Like a rusty piece of iron he stretches to wrestle off the soreness in his legs and the stiffness in his back. In the backdrop the sun lifts it bulk above the horizon. He stops a moment. It's been a long time since he's watched a sunrise. A slow smile begins to spread across his face, but his instincts are quick to make it disappear.
