Abstract: "There are a growing number of real-time applications (e.g., real-time controls, and audio/video conferencing) that require certain quality of service (QoS) guarantees from the underlying communication subsystem. The communication subsystem (host as well as network) must support real-time communication services that can be used to provide the required QoS of these applications, while providing reasonably good performance for best-effort traffic. In this paper we present and evaluate a QoS-sensitive communication subsystem architecture for end hosts that provides real-time communication support for generic network hardware. This architecture provides various services for managing communication resources for guaranteed-QoS (real-time) connections, such as admission control, traffic enforcement, buffer management, and CPU & link scheduling. The design of the architecture is based on three key goals: maintenance of QoS-guarantees on a per-connection basis, overload protection between established connections, and fairness in delivered performance to best-effort traffic. Using this architecture, we implement real-time channels, a paradigm for real-time communication services in packet-switched networks. The proposed architecture features a process- per-channel model for protocol processing that associates a channel handler with each established channel. The model employed for handler execution is one of 'cooperative' preemption, where an executing handler yields the CPU to a waiting higher-priority handler at well-defined preemption points. The architecture provides several configurable policies for CPU scheduling and overload protection. We evaluate the implementation to demonstrate that this architecture maintains QoS guarantees while adhering to the stated design goals. The evaluation also demonstrates convincingly the need for specific features and policies provided in the architecture."

Abstract: "Provision of end-to-end QoS guarantees on communication necessitates appropriate support in the end systems (i.e., hosts) and network routers that form the communication fabric. Typically, the support is in the form of suitable extensions to the communication subsystem and the underlying operating system for specification and maintenance of QoS guarantees. This paper focuses on the architectural and implementation challenges involved in realizing QoS-sensitive host communication subsystems on contemporary microkernel operating systems with limited real-time support. We motivate and describe the components constituting our integrated service architecture that together ensure QoS-sensitive handling of network traffic at both sending and receiving hosts. We separate the policies from mechanisms in each component, demonstrating a communication framework that can implement alternative QoS models by applying appropriate policies. We also report the results of a detailed execution profile of the system to characterize communication costs for the purposes of admission control. An experimental evaluation in a controlled configuration demonstrates the efficacy with which QoS guarantees are maintained, despite limitations imposed by the underlying operating system."

Proliferation of QoS-sensitive client-server Internet applications such as high-quality audio, video-on-demand, e-commerce, and commercial web hosting has generated an impetus to provide performance guarantees. These applications require a guaranteed minimum amount of resources to operate acceptably to the users, thus calling for QoS-provisioning mechanisms. One good place to locate such mechanisms is in server communication subsystems. Server-side communication subsystems manage an increasing number of connection end-points, thus readily controlling important bottleneck resources. We propose, implement, and evaluate a novel communication server architecture that maximizes the aggregate utility of QoS-sensitive connections for a community of clients even in the case of overload. A contribution of this architecture is that it manages QoS from the user space and is transparent to the application. It does not require modifications to the OS kernel, which improves portability and reduces development cost. Results from an experimental evaluation on a microkernel indicate that it achieves end-system overload protection and traffic prioritization, improves insulation between independent clients, adapts to offered load, and enhances aggregate service utility.

Managing the Web of Things: Linking the Real World to the Web presents a consolidated and holistic coverage of engineering, management, and analytics of the Internet of Things. The web has gone through many transformations, from traditional linking and sharing of computers and documents (i.e., Web of Data), to the current connection of people (i.e., Web of People), and to the emerging connection of billions of physical objects (i.e., Web of Things). With increasing numbers of electronic devices and systems providing different services to people, Web of Things applications present numerous challenges to research institutions, companies, governments, international organizations, and others. This book compiles the newest developments and advances in the area of the Web of Things, ranging from modeling, searching, and data analytics, to software building, applications, and social impact. Its coverage will enable effective exploration, understanding, assessment, comparison, and the selection of WoT models, languages, techniques, platforms, and tools. Readers will gain an up-to-date understanding of the Web of Things systems that accelerates their research. Offers a comprehensive and systematic presentation of the methodologies, technologies, and applications that enable efficient and effective management of the Internet of Things Provides an in-depth analysis on the state-of-the-art Web of Things modeling and searching technologies, including how to collect, clean, and analyze data generated by the Web of Things Covers system design and software building principles, with discussions and explorations of social impact for the Web of Things through real-world applications Acts as an ideal reference or recommended text for graduate courses in cloud computing, service computing, and more
