The purpose of this thesis was to design and implement a graphical user interface for a multimedia database management system prototype previously implemented at the Naval Postgraduate School. Because of the complexity of the data types and the difficulty of manipulating them, it was very hard for a casual user to use the previous system. Since graphical interaction simplifies control dialogue, the authors designed and implemented a graphical user interface using C++ and InterViews 3.0.1 for a Sun-3 workstation under a Unix X-Windows environment with mouse support. They then connected this interface to the multimedia database system prototype. Their interface supports incremental query specification using extended SQL and can be connected to database applications in several different ways. An embedded global data structure, a text file, or a character string can be used for connections. A second version of the interface for a Sun-4 workstation was built and connected to another database system using the character string and text file. This version demonstrated even better performance.

The purpose of this thesis is to design and implement a prototype graphical user interface for a structured model management system. The program is written for an IBM PC using Lattice-C, the Halo graphics package, and the ORACLE DBMS. Design and Implementation issues are discussed and evaluated. Future enhancements to the program and a recommendation as to the disposition of the prototype are also included. A brief explanation of structured modeling is presented. An example problem is used to illustrate the various model representation of structured modeling from a database representation. The results of this thesis show that the prototype design methodology is an excellent supplement to the traditional life-cycle design methodology. The implications of this observation are discussed in relationship to the graphical user interface program. The purpose of this study is to analyze and develop a distributed object-oriented database management system (DOODBMS) application to support parallel software development of the Parallel Algorithms and Applications Group (PAAG) at AFIT. By following the software lifecycle of object-oriented paradigm, this thesis investigation is intended to generate requirements analysis, design, implementation, user interface design and implementation, and integration of the database application with the user interface. ITASCA, an existing DOODBMS platform, has been chosen to prototype the application for its distribution functionalities and object-oriented modeling power. The user interface of the database application is based on X-window OSF/Motif front-end system for its efficiency. Various operations of this distributed database include: retrieve information in the database, modify data at the local site, look up information of publications of libraries, etc. The user may access each local computer through graphical user interface without knowing the query language constructs of the DOODBMS platform ...
