This new edited volume of critical essays examines designs for modern living in Asia between 1945 and 1990. Focusing particularly on the post-World War II and postcolonial years, this book advances multidisciplinary knowledge on approaches to and designs for modern living. Developed from extensive primary research and case studies, each essay illuminates commonalities and particularities of the trajectories of Modernism and notions of modernity, their translation and manifestation in life across Asia through design. Authors address everyday negotiations and experiences of being modern by studying exhibitions, architecture, modern interiors, printed ephemera, literary discourses, healthy living movements and transnational networks of modern designers. They examine processes of exchange between people, institutions and with governments, in and across Asia, as well as with the USA and countries in Western Europe. This book highlights the ways in which the production and discourses of modern design were underscored by economic advancement and modernization processes, and fuelled by aesthetic debates on modern design. Critically exploring design for modern living in Asia, this book offers fresh perspectives on Modernism to students and scholars.

Addressing histories of modernism, the discourse of modernity and modernisation processes in national and transnational contexts, this book examines different designs for and meanings of 'modern living' across 20th-century Asia. Design and Modernity in Asia contributes to the fast-growing body of literature on postcolonial modernism and non-Western global design history, with particular focus is on post-civil war and postcolonial years in Asia. The book develops methodological approaches to studying Asian modern design history and explores how marginalised individuals and groups encountered or experienced modernity. Most previous research on modernism and modernity in Asia has focused on certain geographical pockets and within particular national boundaries such as China, India and Japan. This book expands the discourse of modernism to include geographical areas or countries in Asia that have been under-explored in scholarly debates such as Bangladesh, Iran, Korea and Turkey. The newly unearthed histories complement and challenge the existing paradigm of modernism debates. Developed from extensive primary research and a great variety of case studies, each chapter in this book illuminates commonalities and particularities of the trajectories of modernism, and their translation and manifestation in Asian living.

"Modern Asian Design provides a comprehensive introduction to the development of Asian design in the modern period, tracing historical threads and offering a theoretical framework within which to chart the history of design in Asia. Rather than a singular 'Asian history', the book presents a series of studies centred on trade routes, colonial relationships, regional networks and cross-cultural exchanges. Modern Asian Design builds on existing resources beyond design history in an effort to map the field, focusing particularly on relations between Asia and the West, and also across Asian design cultures. Opening with a brief overview of trade and exchange networks in the 17th and 18th centuries, the bulk of this study comprises analysis of the development of modern design in Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries, a period of rapid modernization. The book's final chapters bring these central ideas into a contemporary and highly relevant context"--Back cover.

An exciting explosion of urban expansion is occurring in East Asia: cities such as Singapore, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai are expanding at a prodigious rate and bringing widespread change to the region. Peter G. Rowe's East Asia Modern is a timely comparative analysis of urban growth in this rapidly evolving part of the globe. A renowned scholar on East Asian architecture and urbanism, Peter G. Rowe examines how the unique modernizing process of East Asian cities can be most usefully understood. Rowe offers a historical assessment of the region, chronicling the cities' development over the last century and setting into context their individual paths toward becoming modern. Rowe explains what the modernizing process has meant for the cultural diffusion of predominantly Western ideas, how East Asian urban regions have developed a distinct type of modernity, and what lessons can be gleaned from the contemporary East Asian experience. Refuting many common misconceptions about contemporary East Asian life, East Asia Modern offers a readable critical assessment of life in modern East Asia while also pointing to possibilities for the future.

Alternative Post Modernity written by William Siew Wai Lim and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Architecture categories.

In this book, Singapore architect and intellectual William Lim continues his search for alternative Asian perspectives to Eurocentric modernity and US-style globalization. This compilation comprises essays and lectures of the past two years, when the author pondered contemporary critical cultural and urban discourses through which he formulated new ideas and analyses, particularly in relation to the postmodern, glocality and social justice. Lim's articles express powerful indictments of the multiple failures of Eurocentric modernity. He challenges the mainstream modernist theories on urbanism and globality. He offers critical alternatives and expands the frontiers of radical postmodern urbanism to include sustainability, basic needs, citizen participation and social justice. The title of the book, Alternative (Post)modernity, clearly signals the complex relational fluidity, hybridity and de-territorisation between modernity and postmodernity. The slogan of "think global and act local and vice versa", perhaps can describe the dialectical, indefinable and ever evolving relationship of (Post)modernity.
