The storage yard is the operational and geographical centre of most seaport container terminals. Therefore, it is of particular importance for the whole terminal system and plays a major role for trade and transport flows. One of the latest trends in container-storage operations is the automated Rail-Mounted-Gantry-Crane system, which offers dense stacking, and offers low labour costs. The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact of instituting automated storage and retrieval systems on the operations of a prototype maritime container terminal. A 3D simulation model is developed to measure the effectiveness of the proposed total system and compare it with existing practices. Three performance analysis variables are defined for this comparison. These key variables are (1) throughput, (2) space utilization, and (3) horizontal material handling equipment utilization. The basic model is generic in nature, however, its details are on the basis of a prototype terminal in the combined ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

The yard block of a container terminal is the central point of synchronisation for asynchronous container flows between deep-sea vessels and transport to the hinterland. The structure of the block stipulates that containers are stacked on top of each other with only the topmost container directly accessible by a yard crane. This book describes a holistic and integrative approach to container handling in yard blocks to optimise productivity by minimising re-handling operations. The approach presented is two-fold: first, a theoretical foundation of the interdependencies in decision-making is established using mathematical programming.
