The purpose of this work is to describe the theory and design of such low frequency lumped element directional couplers. A model for the coupler is developed and the equations which describe it are derived. Scattering matrices for one and two section couplers are obtained. Computer solutions for three section couplers are presented. Experimental results for one, two, and three section couplers are presented and comparison with theory are made. Four port directional couplers which utilize coupled transmission lines have been studied by various investigators. The possibility is investigated of generalizing the four port result to achieve a 2n-port directional coupler. The viewpoint is essentially different from that used by previous investigators in that a networks approach is used throughout. The transfer impedance matrix of n+1 coupled lines is derived. Then the concept of a scattering matrix normalized to complex port impedances is introduced and the transfer scattering matrix of the coupled line system is found. Due to certain convenient properties of the scattering formalism it is possible to simply demonstrate that any system of n+1 coupled transmission lines is a potential 2n-port directional coupler. Equations for the terminating impedances which make the coupled line system act as a directional coupler are derived. The sensitivity of the device to a small change in these terminations is investigated. Also, the results of tests made on an experimental 6-port directional coupler are presented. (Author).

The research in this thesis presents the analysis and design of multi-channel directional coupler structures for applications in optical sensing and electro-optic devices. The structures are analysed using supermodes and a potential limitation is identified with the discovery of the phenomenon of partial image revivals. A detailed analysis is presented along with one possible exploitation of this phenomenon with the design of a compact wavelength division multiplexer. The outcomes of the research include: i) an evanescent field optical sensor is designed using the multi-channel directional coupler structure; the design is based on the idea that the analyte to be measured infiltrates the spacing between the coupled waveguides so that the sensor can exploit the exponential dependence of the coupling on the analyte refractive index; ii) an optical chemical sensor is designed that uses silicon slot waveguides; the sensor exploits the high confinement of light in the slots, whilst retaining the exponential dependence of the coupling on the analyte refractive index; iii) discovery of the differential multi-channel directional coupler structure; and the design of a more efficient optical chemical sensor using this structure; iv) a multichannel directional coupler refractive index sensor is design in fiber, i.e. as a dual-core microstructured optical fiber; v) a compact wavelength division multiplexer for fluorescence sensing is designed; vi) electro-optic devices including an optical electric field sensor, switch and modulators are design using the multi-channel directional coupler structure and recent electro-optic materials.

The patent describes a broad-band lumped element directional coupler for measuring either the forward or reflected power in a coaxial transmission line. A resistive voltage divider is coupled to the center conductor of a transmission line with a capacitor to keep the phase of the voltage sampling circuit equal to the phase of the current sampling circuit. Capacitors shunting the resistors make the voltage ratio of the resistive voltage divider independent of frequency over a large frequency range. Directivity greater than 50 dB is achieved over a large frequency range for coupling ratios of 30, 40 and 50 dB.
