Loss of tactile perception is the most challenging limitation of state-of-the-art technology for minimally invasive surgery. In conventional open surgery, surgeons rely on their tactile sensation to perceive the tissue type, anatomical landmarks, and instrument-tissue interaction in the patient's body. To compensate for the loss of tactile feedback in minimally invasive surgery, researchers have proposed various tactile sensors based on electrical and optical sensing principles. Optical-based sensors have shown the most compatibility with the functional and physical requirements of minimally invasive surgery applications. However, the proposed tactile sensors in the literature are typically bulky, expensive, cumbersome to integrate with surgical instruments and show nonlinearity in interaction with biological tissues. In this doctoral study, different optical tactile sensing principles were proposed, modeled, validated and various tactile sensors were fabricated, and experimentally studied to address the limitations of the state-of-the-art. The present thesis first provides a critical review of the proposed tactile sensors in the literature with a comparison of their advantages and limitations for surgical applications. Afterward, it compiles the results of the design, modeling, and validation of a hybrid optical-piezoresistive sensor, a distributed Bragg reflecting sensor, and two sensors based on the variable bending radius light intensity modulation principle. The performance of each sensor was verified experimentally for the required criteria of accuracy, resolution, range, repeatability, and hysteresis. Also, a novel image-based intensity estimation technique was proposed and its applicability for being used in surgical applications was verified experimentally. In the end, concluding remarks and recommendations for future studies are provided.

The fundamental requirement of a competent tactile sensor for manipulating an object is to determine the magnitude and the position of an applied force on it. In addition, it is important to determine orientation of the object in relation to the tactile sensor. In order to achieve these goals, most investigators have attempted to design a tactile sensor using an array of sensing elements arranged in matrix form. There are several problems associated with this type of tactile sensors. These problems include cross-talk between sensing elements, fragility, and complexity. This thesis reports on the design, modeling, fabrication and testing of a membrane tactile sensing system with only four sensing elements. By using membrane stress combined with triangulation approach, it is shown that it is possible to overcome the above problems. The prototype sensor consists of a single film of 25 micron thick Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) film, which is held between two 12 mm-thick flat Plexiglass plates, each with a 90 mm-diameter center hole. Four square sensing elements, each 3 min side, were fabricated around the center of the membrane. The fabrication of the sensing elements is performed using photolithographic and etching techniques. By applying force with a probe of various shapes and sizes at various points away from the sensing elements, and using a geometric mapping process, the sensor is calibrated. As the result of calibration various isocharge contours were drawn. Using both finite element and experimental analysis, it is shown that it is possible to determine the position, orientation and the magnitude of the applied load though various flat shaped probes, by using only four sensing elements. The experimental and the finite element results are compared. It is shown that there is a good correlation between the finite element predictions and experimental data.

The commercially available endoscopic graspers are tooth like in order to grasp slippery tissues during a Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). However, they don't provide the tactile feedback to the surgeon during the operation. One of the most important requirements of a tactile feedback in MIS is softness sensing. This thesis presents the design, analysis, fabrication and testing of an annular microfabricated piezoelectric tactile sensor to determine the softness of tissues during MIS. This tooth-like sensor consists of an array of four sensors on each jaw of the endoscopic grasper. Each sensor consists of a rigid inner cylinder surrounded by a soft hollow cylinder. The sensor works on the principle of relative deformation between the inner rigid cylinder and the outer compliant cylinder. In this design Polyvinyledene Fluoride (PVDF) film is used as the sensing element. The fabrication sequence of the sensor involves three steps, namely, fabrication of cylinders, PVDF film patterning and sensor assembly. The compliant cylinders are realized by micromolding of liquid silicone rubber. The PVDF film was patterned using photolithography techniques and the patterned portions are etched using commercially available aluminium etchant. Different parts of the sensor are assembled under a stereomicroscope. Different materials are tested under dynamic applied load and their modulus of elasticity has been found using the force ratio output from the PVDF sensing element. A 3D analysis in ANSYS has been done to compare the force ratios with the experimental values. It has been shown that good agreement exists between experimental and finite element results. A viscoelastic Kelvin model is employed for tissue characterization. A closed form expression is derived to express the relationship between the force ratio and compliance. Using the force ratios output from the experiments performed, the compliance of various soft materials in contact with the tactile sensor are obtained. These results are shown to be in close agreement with the manufacturer's value.
