This book provides basic information on the design of structures with tropical woods. It is intended primarily for teaching university- and college-level courses in structural design. It is also suitable as a reference material for practitioners. Although parts of the background material relate specifically to West and East Africa, the design principles apply to the whole of tropical Africa, Latin America and South Asia. The book is laced with ample illustrations including photographs of real life wood structures and structural elements across Africa that make for interesting reading. It has numerous manual and Excel spread sheet worked examples and review questions that can properly guide a first-time designer of wooden structural elements. A number of design problems are also solved using the FORTRAN programming language. Topics covered in the thirteen chapters of the book include a brief introduction to the book, the anatomy and physical properties of tropical woods; a bri ef review of the mechanical properties of wood, timber seasoning and preservation, uses of wood and wood products in construction; basic theory of structures, and structural load computations; design of wooden beams, solid and built-up wooden columns, wood connections and wooden trusses; as well as a brief introduction to the design of wooden bridges.

The fourth edition of Design of Structural Elements: Concrete, Steelwork, Masonry and Timber Designs to Eurocodes is a concise single-volume introduction to the design of structural elements in concrete, steel, timber, masonry and composites. It provides design principles and guidance in line with Eurocodes, current as of 2021. Topics include the philosophy of design, sustainable development, basic structural concepts, and material properties. After an overview of structural design, the book contains self-contained chapters with numerous diagrams and worked examples on design in reinforced concrete, structural steelwork and steel/concrete composites, masonry and timber based on EN 1990-1997. Selected extracts from these publications assist familiarity. Elements considered cover reinforced concrete and composite floors, isolated foundation, cantilever retaining wall, load-bearing and panel walls, stud wall and connections. The text is ideal for student civil and structural engineers on degree and diploma courses, and also practising civil and structural engineers and other built environment professions. The online Support Materials for adopting course instructors includes an extensive set of solutions to the problems in the book and PowerPoint slides for use in lectures: www.routledge.com/9781032076317.

Advances in the materials and the digitalization of architecture bring about new methods in design and construction. Whereas traditional timber construction consists of pre-cut and pre-assembled timber sections, modern timber buildings today consist of elaborate wood-based materials. Owing to their flexibility and good properties in terms of building physics and ecology, these wood-based materials are ideal for computer-aided building component production. Fifteen case examples from research, teaching, and practical applications provide inspiring insights into the potential of formable wood-based materials and digital design: Woven Wood, Wood Foam, Living Wood and Organic Joints, Timber Joints for Robotic Building Processes, Efficiencies of Wood, Designing with Tree Form.

This excellent text highlights all aspects of the analysis and design of elements related to spatial structures, which have been carefully selected from existing structures. Analysing the design of elements of any full scale structure that contains facilities that have already been constructed makes good economic sense and avoids duplication in respect of research and development, the decision-making process and accurate design criteria for new constructed facilities.

Roelof A. A. Oldeman Tropical hardwoods are one of the essential cogs in the complex socio-economic machinery keeping alive an ever-increasing humanity with steadily rising claims upon a finite-resource environment. Their position in this context at first sight seems to be analogous to that of other commodities, such as rubber, metals, mineral oil, tropical fruits and many more. Looking closer, however, tropical hardwoods occupy a special place. Their vast majority, unlike tropical crops, still comes forth from natural forests being exploited by man. This exploitation straight from the natural resource is something they have in common with oil and metals, but the fact that they grow in living systems places them closer to crops. Natural forest ecosystems are not renewable. Timber producing trees, however, can be made into a renewable resource on condition that ways and means are found to cultivate them as a crop. be understood as a socio-economic The tropical hardwood situation can best chain, with the resource base at one end, the consumer community at the other and everything that has to do with the market in the middle. Now, at the resource side, the economics of tropical hardwood extraction barely got out of the primeval ways of wood-gathering by hand and by axe, which were still predominant in the nineteen-forties. There, the offer of natural products was so immense and so near to hand that no care had to be taken of the resource.

Integrating basic theory with practical real-world designs, this second edition covers all aspects of design and building with wood. While retaining many unique features from the highly successful first edition, new additions have been incorporated to reflect recent advances in the field, including the adoption of the LRFD code. This comprehensive text not only contains update on the ASD methods but also provides an explanation of the new LRFD methods, plus solved problems and examples in each section to reflect its application among all areas of designing with wood. This is the only book currently available that contains both the ASD and LRFD methods.

Structures and Architecture - REstructure REmaterialize REthink REuse contains the contributions to the 6th International Conference on Structures and Architecture (ICSA 2025, Antwerp, Belgium, 8-11 July 2025). As a response to the pressing global climate and energy crisis, and with new settings and tools, the design and construction of our built environment needs reconsideration and extension. The papers call for a re-imagination of current practices regarding structures and architecture. The volumes of the series are published every three years, in tandem with the conferences organised by the International Association of Structures and Architecture. They aim to reach a global audience of researchers, practitioners, and students, including architects, structural and construction engineers, builders and building consultants, constructors, material suppliers, planners, urban designers, anthropologists, economists, sociologists, artists, product manufacturers, and other professionals involved in the design and realisation of architectural, structural, and infrastructural projects.
