Science has proven that sitting too much is bad for your health, but what can you do about it if you're stuck at your desk all day? "Designed to Move" gives deskbound professionals a practical, easy-to-follow movement plan to fight the debilitating and life-shortening effects of sitting disease. Dr. Joan Vernikos, former director of NASA’s Life Sciences Division, draws on decades of scientific research on astronauts to show readers how to use gravity-based movement to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting and maintain lifelong good health. Written for everyone who spends most of their lives sitting in chairs, "Designed to Move" provides readers with a science-backed health program that helps people stay healthy while at work. Expanding upon her groundbreaking previous book, "Sitting Kills, Moving Heals," Dr. Vernikos shows how developing simple new lifestyle habits at the office can reverse the symptoms of sitting disease and even aging itself, and lead to a life of bountiful health.

The Phenomenon of Studio Goldsmithing When the history of art in the 1980s is written, much of it will be etched in gold. This is the time of the contemporary goldsmith, an artist who chooses to work in precious metals rather than oils or marble. The contemporary jeweler-as-artist has only recently become a re cognized force. With rare exceptions, the whole field is little more than thirty years old. But it is only within the past fifteen years that these jewelers have entered the jewelry mainstream. The phenomenon of contemporary goldsmithing embraces an eclectic group of artists, each with a unique vision, each taking a per sonal path to jewelry producing. They have as little relationship to the typical, mass-produced jewelry as a champagne maker has to a bottler of orange soda. They approach a piece of art, not a piece of metal. The work is personal and a perfect expression of the "back to the land" movement that spawned it. Many of these goldsmiths were looking not merely for a way to make a living but for a way to make a life that was worthy of living. Running a business while trying to remain a creative metalsmith at the same time is the ongoing challenge. The jeweler-artists have solved or resolved these often conflicting needs in slightly different ways and in a beautiful variety of techniques and styles. Their meth ods, their growth, and their work are discussed here.

An engaging examination of how video game design can create strong, positive emotional experiences for players—with examples from popular, indie, and art games. This is a renaissance moment for video games—in the variety of genres they represent, and the range of emotional territory they cover. But how do games create emotion? In How Games Move Us, Katherine Isbister takes the reader on a timely and novel exploration of the design techniques that evoke strong emotions for players. She counters arguments that games are creating a generation of isolated, emotionally numb, antisocial loners. Games, Isbister shows us, can actually play a powerful role in creating empathy and other strong, positive emotional experiences; they reveal these qualities over time, through the act of playing. She offers a nuanced, systematic examination of exactly how games can influence emotion and social connection, with examples—drawn from popular, indie, and art games—that unpack the gamer’s experience. Isbister describes choice and flow, two qualities that distinguish games from other media, and explains how game developers build upon these qualities using avatars, non-player characters, and character customization, in both solo and social play. She shows how designers use physical movement to enhance players’ emotional experience, and examines long-distance networked play. She illustrates the use of these design methods with examples that range from Sony’s Little Big Planet to the much-praised indie game Journey to art games like Brenda Romero’s Train. Isbister’s analysis shows us a new way to think about games, helping us appreciate them as an innovative and powerful medium for doing what film, literature, and other creative media do: helping us to understand ourselves and what it means to be human.

The Human Body Is Made to Move at Any AgeThe human body is made to move, and it moves best with practice. If you fail to use your joints and muscles consistently as you age, you can lose your range of motion and physical capability. However, you can keep your ability to function well if you stay active. Even if you have lost some capabilities through lack of use, injury, or a medical condition, you can regain them-or at least improve them-at any age. The human body is remarkable at healing and adapting. Regaining and maintaining the ability to move allows you to live a more independent life-one that gives you freedom to do more of what you want to do. Joseph Wegley, DPT works with individuals every day to help them regain and exceed previous mobility levels regardless of age, injury, or illness. His passion is helping people regain balance, strength, coordination, and the ability to complete routine daily tasks. This ability allows them to live more fully and with greater independence. Through his work, he has identified nine benchmarks for maintaining and maximizing your mobility. Made to Move provides you with practical tools to help you maintain or regain your mobility:--Instructions for simple benchmark movements to establish a baseline, wherever you are--Activities to help you improve if you can't fully achieve the benchmark--Safe, effective exercises for strength and endurance using equipment you already have or can obtain inexpensively--Tips to help you realize you have the power to do this for yourself--Encouragement that you can improve your mobility, no matter where you are nowWith a little instruction and motivation, most aging adults could prevent falls and a decline in their ability to do routine daily tasks. Joe wrote this manual to reach more aging adults before they need the services of a physical therapist to recover from injury or illness. His mission is to help people regain, maintain, and improve their physical abilities well into the later years of life--to offer them a means to greater satisfaction.
