Long after the Little Ice Age in London, we find Desiree in 1910 hosting a ski party in Saint Anton, Austria at the Gastoff Hotel where the sport was born. She's there with Baron Phillipe, his girlfriend, model and race car driver Hellee, his private secretary Nicki who likes to tell stories about Grand Hotels, and Etori the Italian who makes race cars for the Baron. Soon after, three Germans arrive, Carl, his wife Bertie and William, who made the first automobiles in Stuttgart. They're joined by French rival carmakers Marcel and Louie and their girlfriends Gigi and Camille from the Moulin Rouge. But a guest is missing, the piece of the puzzle Desiree needs to dominate the new automobile industry. His name is Edvard, an Austrian former diplomat and businessman, the group finds broken down on the road from Lech, with his wife Racquel. Edvard wants to get into the nascent automobile industry and Desiree convinces him to order cars from Carl and William and race them in Nice on the French Riviera. He agrees, but only after Desiree uses her engineering skills to demand design changes. Edvard arrives in Nice without his wife and stays at the Grand Hotel on the beach, declining Phillipe's invitation to join him and Desiree at Phillipe's Villa called Lac aux Dames for its fabulous pool. Desiree stokes the rivalry between Phillipe and Edvard who soon acquires a villa on the Promenade des Anglais with not only a pool but space for an automobile showroom in the heart of the action. After the aviators come and go for the annual Air Show, it's automobile racing time. Desiree and Edvard take delivery of their cars from Carl, William and Bertie who arrive with Edvard's wife Racquel. Racquel discovers Edvard calls Desiree his Mercedes, a gift and blessing, and named his house and showroom the Villa Mercedes in her honor. The rivalry between Phillipe and Edvard, Desiree and Racquel, and the German, French and Italian car makers threatens to make the races from Nice to the famed hilltop town of La Turbie more combustible than gasoline.

Today, we are so accustomed to consuming the amplified lives of film stars that the origins of the phenomenon may seem inevitable in retrospect. But the conjunction of the terms "movie" and "star" was inconceivable prior to the 1910s. Flickers of Desire explores the emergence of this mass cultural phenomenon, asking how and why a cinema that did not even run screen credits developed so quickly into a venue in which performers became the American film industry's most lucrative mode of product individuation. Contributors chart the rise of American cinema's first galaxy of stars through a variety of archival sources--newspaper columns, popular journals, fan magazines, cartoons, dolls, postcards, scrapbooks, personal letters, limericks, and dances. The iconic status of Charlie Chaplin's little tramp, Mary Pickford's golden curls, Pearl White's daring stunts, or Sessue Hayakawa's expressionless mask reflect the wild diversity of a public's desired ideals, while Theda Bara's seductive turn as the embodiment of feminine evil, George Beban's performance as a sympathetic Italian immigrant, or G. M. Anderson's creation of the heroic cowboy/outlaw character transformed the fantasies that shaped American filmmaking and its vital role in society.

This biographical dictionary shines the spotlight on several hundred unheralded stunt performers who created some of the cinema's greatest action scenes without credit or recognition. The time period covered encompasses the silent comedy days of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, the early westerns of Tom Mix and John Wayne, the swashbucklers of Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, and Burt Lancaster, the costume epics of Charlton Heston and Kirk Douglas, and the action films of Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, and Charles Bronson. Without stuntmen and women working behind the scenes the films of these action superstars would not have been as successful. Now fantastic athletes and leading stunt creators such as Yakima Canutt, Richard Talmadge, Harvey Parry, Allen Pomeroy, Dave Sharpe, Jock Mahoney, Chuck Roberson, Polly Burson, Bob Morgan, Loren Janes, Dean Smith, Hal Needham, Martha Crawford, Ronnie Rondell, Terry Leonard, and Bob Minor are given their proper due. Each entry covers the performer's athletic background, military service, actors doubled, noteworthy stunts, and a rundown of his or her best known screen credits.

No other silent film director has been as extensively studied as D. W. Griffith. However, only a small group of his more than five hundred films has been the subject of a systematic analysis, and the vast majority of his other works still await proper examination. For the first time in film studies, the complete creative output of Griffith - from 'Professional Jealousy '(1907) to 'The' 'Struggle '(1931) - will be explored in this multivolume collection of contributions from an international team of leading scholars in the field. Created as a companion to the ongoing retrospective held by the Pordenone Silent Film Festival, the Griffith Project is an indispensable guide to the work of a crucial figure in the arts of the nineteenth century. The latest volume assesses Griffith's work in 1914-15. It includes an extensive, multi-authored evaluation of 'The Birth of' 'a Nation.'
