La fonoaudiología ha evolucionado en su marco conceptual abordando los fenómenos en un principio desde déficit o daño hasta la función en sí misma. De éste modo la audición, la voz, el lenguaje, el habla -en tanto aspectos de la comunicación humana- han cobrado una nueva identidad. La innovación se fundamenta en el abordaje de la función en todas las instancias del proceso salud enfermedad y en la necesidad de producción de conocimiento científico propio. Se asume el desafío de intervención en el ámbito de la salud superando la fragmentación inicial que implicaba la intervención fonoaudiológica sólo ante la patología. En este libro las autoras se apropian del sonido: como "in put'' y como "out put''. El primero como material que procesa la audición desde la captación del mismo hasta su procesamiento auditivo a nivel central y cimentando el desarrollo de la comunicación en los aspectos de habla y lenguaje oral. El segundo, "out put'', refiere al sujeto como productor de sonido mediante la voz. Sirviéndose del mecanismo laríngeo de la fonación y la audición como marco referencial es que se logra alcanzar una potente interacción que optimiza y perfecciona ambas funciones en la comunicación humana.
