Max Aub es, a mi modo de ver, el escritor de nuestro exilio republicano de 1939 que más y mejor ha tratado el tema del exilio. Ya Francisco Ayala afirmó en 1993: «La guerra misma y el exilio constituyen en el conjunto de esa obra una constante temática, son su tema predominante. En eso estriba la singularidad de este escritor. Max Aub (1903‐1972) ist einer der großen Unbekannten der Literatur des 20. Ein gutes Dutzend Romane hat Max Aub geschrieben, über 50 Theaterstücke, mehr als 60 Erzählungen, daneben Essays und Literaturgeschichten, Gedichte und Tagebücher, Reiseberichte und Drehbücher. In exemplarischen Einzelanalysen erschließt die Studie dieses weit ausgreifende literarische Universum und präsentiert es als Vorläufer einer post-nationalen und transkulturellen Ästhetik. Daneben zeigt sie, dass Aub mit seinem Einakter De algún tiempo a esta parte (1939) und der Erzählung Manuscrito Cuervo. Historia de Jacobo (1948) einer der ersten war ‐ nicht nur in der spanischsprachigen Literatur ‐, der die Welt der Konzentrationslager literarisch zu erfassen vermochte. Max Aub und die spanische Literatur zwischen Avantgarde und Exil ist die erste deutsch-sprachige Studie zum Gesamtwerk des Autors.
