Excerpt from Desultory Notes on Jamieson's Scottish Dictionary The subjoined letter to the editor of the Glasgow Herald will explain how these somewhat desultory and very incomplete Notes on Jamieson first came to be put together. When the editor of the Herald kindly gave them a place in his somewhat crowded paper, a number of my friends were kind enough to say that they thought some of the Notes were of value, and asked me whether I would not think of getting them printed in a collected form. I have accordingly done so. These Notes do not claim to be anything like a revisal or correction of Jamieson, nor do I claim to have any very intimate acquaintance with pure Scotch. They are simply jottings made from time to time which, for the present purpose, I have somewhat amplified, and, as will be seen from many of the Notes, I am myself only seeking for information which I shall be glad to get from those who are better up in "guid braid Scots" than I am. This is the first full account of the making of John Jamieson's Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language. The dictionary was published in two volumes in 1808, with a two-volume Supplement following in 1825. Lists of Scots words had been compiled before, but Jamieson's was the first complete dictionary of the language. It was a landmark in the development of historical lexicography and was an inspiration for later lexicographers, including Sir James Murray, founding editor of the OED. Susan Rennie's account of Jamieson's work and the methods he developed interweaves biography, lexicography, and linguistic, social, and book history to present a rounded account of the man, his work, and his times. It is the first study to draw on Jamieson's correspondence and the surviving manuscript materials for the Dictionary and Supplement to reveal Jamieson's working methods and the important contributions made by Sir Walter Scott and others to his work.

Scotticisms in Grammar and Vocabulary investigates the historical development of the (mainly sociolinguistic) phenomena which favoured a process of increasing anglicisation in Late Modern Scots, leading many speakers and writers to strenuous attempts to avoid pronunciations, syntactic forms and lexical items that were restricted either from the geographical of the social point of view. These attempts, however, were never quite successful, and the influence of Scots on the distinctiveness of present-day Scottish English is still very clearly discernible. main features of contemporary Scottish Standard English are discussed. These chapters are followed by an analysis of the concept of 'Scotticism' from the historical point of view. Special prominence is given to the eighteenth century; the role of the most important prescriptive grammarians is described, together with an assessment of the ambiguous sociolinguistic attitudes that Scotticisms provoked at the turn of the century, when new literary figures returned status to 'the vernacular'. Finally, the nineteenth century is taken into consideration. This, in turn, leads back to contemporary language, in order to discuss the ways in which items have changed their status, from 'proscribed Scotticisms' to 'covert' or 'overt Scotticisms', worthy of stylistic consideration, and still employed as highly valuable tools of expression.
