According to the statistics from the Hong Kong Police, around 6000 juveniles (aged 7 to 15) were arrested each year in the last ten years. Although not all these young people arrested were convicted as delinquents, the problem of youth-at-risk has drawn attention from the public and the government. Various Western and local theories have been offered to account for the problem. Some commonly recognized categories of at-risk youth are youth gangs, young substance abusers, school bullies, and cautioned juveniles. These young people are usually perceived as having an impulsive nature; they require welfare services rather than punishment as criminals. This volume is a collection of chapters covering various aspects of the youth problem. Besides examining the causes of the problem and the principles behind the solution, different and effective approaches in working with the various categories of at-risk youths are introduced. The overall aim is to help this group of young people to lead a healthy life and integrate into society as contributing members. The book contains both theory and practice, and is suitable for social work students and professionals.

Keeping Them Off The Streets written by Tim Caley and has been published by Troubador Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-12 with Family & Relationships categories.

Keeping Them Off The Streets is a remarkable account of over forty years’ experience in the field of youth work. It recounts not just personal experience but also reflects on the policy changes that have accompanied successive governments and new developments in sociological research, their efficacy and implications. It tracks Tim Caley’s career from Sheffield housing estate through the challenges of delivering a successful youth service at a County Level, the world of the Ofsted inspector, and finally a much sought-after private consultant in the youth services field. The book provides a new and original perspective on its subject matter. It combines sound research and intellectual analysis with a personal memoir of the issues facing teenagers, then and now. It is a mixture of policy, personality and practice. Its author writes from the prism of wide personal experience: as a teacher, youth club leader, detached youth worker, County Youth Officer, Ofsted inspector, management consultant and government special adviser. But the book is not an academic study: it fills a gap in the literature between university academic-led policy essays and theories and the many disparate publications on local practice or organisational history. It is hugely readable - using humour, anecdote and characters to illuminate its messages. Its aim is to inspire, challenge and remind its audience of the benefits and continued importance of work with young people. It is thought-provoking, easy-to-read yet written with eloquence and passion throughout.

This new study explores how British youth was made, and how it made itself, over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Urbanisation and industrialisation brought challenges that altered how young people were both perceived and understood. As adults found it difficult to comprehend the rapidity of societal change, focus on the young intensified, and they became a symbol of uncertainty about the future. Highlighting both change and striking continuity, Melanie Tebbutt traces the origins and development of key themes and debates in the history of modern British youth. Current issues such as the ageing of western societies, high levels of youth unemployment and the potential for social and political unrest make this a timely study.

This fully updated new edition of Ethical Issues in Youth Work presents a comprehensive overview and discussion of a range of ethical challenges facing youth workers in their everyday practice. The first part offers a clear outline of the nature of professional ethics, relevant ethical theories and an overview of the policy and organisational context of youth work. The second part is grounded firmly in practice, with experts in the field exploring specific issues that raise ethical difficulties for youth workers, such as: • when to breach confidentiality • information sharing in inter-professional contexts • the ethics of youth participation and active citizenship • how to balance the roles of control, empowerment and education • negotiating personal and professional values, interests and commitments in youth work • dilemmas for faith-based and black and minority ethnic workers • issues for practitioner researchers. Ethical Issues in Youth Work offers a timely and unique insight into both the dilemmas of youth work practice and some of the more recent challenges faced by youth workers and all those working with young people in the light of current public attitudes and government policies towards young people.
