Excerpt from Details of the Architecture of Tuscany We have endeavoured to make the book as comprehensive as possible in the range of subjects chosen for presentation in order that its usefulness may cover a wide field. We have endeavoured also to select subjects replete with suggestive value and suitable for a diversity of applications. Most of all, we have striven for absolute exactitude and fidelity of presentment so that the exquisite subtlety of all the details may be preserved. Not only are the meas ured drawings given, so that the physical actuality of each subject may be grasped, but likewise half tone illustrations which convey the spirit of the work and the ensemble of its environment. We have included a number of homely items such as the measurements of flooring bricks and how they are laid, or the dimensions of roofing tiles and the manner of their hanging, items devoid, perhaps, of spectacular appeal but valuable for their intimate constructional interest. Information upon such points as these the architect seeks for in vain in the monumental works. Along with these minor but exceedingly important matters are included sundry measurements of rustication the treatment of farmhouse and villa chimneys, and exact schemes of the painting of beamed ceilings. Excerpt from Villas of Florence and Tuscany Without a knowledge of the unsung loveliness of Tuscan rural life and the Spirit of Tuscany, one cannot hope to have an adequate and sympathetic understanding of the Italian Renaissance, that marvellous efflorescence of Italian genius to which our modern civilisation is debtor in countless ways. Only the larger and more celebrated villas are familiar to most of us. Hence we are apt to think of all villas as imposing in size of structure and area of demesne. Actual facts, however do not bear out such a conception. Hundreds of villas are of modest extent and unpretentious structure. Not a few are really small. Excerpt from Northern Italian Details Northern Italian is, to many of us, a sufficiently alluring adjective applied to almost anything, from architectural details to a specialized cuisine; but it was not wholly the title that first fixed my serious attention on the plates making up this volume. I have had the habit of looking through the current architectural periodicals and marking plates to be cut out for the office files. I have come to mark so very few that when I began by selecting the first of this series I remember think ing that I should probably stop there, but I ended by taking the entire series. Excerpt from The Smaller Tuscan Towns It is natural that the traveller should want to see how this remarkable society expressed itself, what sort of surroundings it provided for its activities, how it satisfied its love of beauty. Fortunately the search for such things will take him into every corner of a wonderful land; he will inevitably mix with every condition of men, he will see the life of a race having an immemorial tradition of civilisa tion, he will journey through a country of strangely diverse beauty. If he be of Northern race he will find the quality of the life and the art gain in piquancy by a setting different from his own. This variety in habit and the climate of a Southern land will yield a constant delight, whether the sojourn be in some great city in some wide upland valley, in some remote mountain town, among the chestnut forests, or on the strangely fascinating Maremma shore.
