The topic of this work are two further developments of the Factorization method for electrical impedance tomography. We present a modification of this method that is capable of detecting mixed inclusions, i.e. both inclusions with a higher as well as inclusions with a lower conductivity than the background medium. In addition, we derive a new method to compute the conductivity inside inclusions after they have been localized.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications GEOMETRIC METHODS IN INVERSE PROBLEMS AND PDE CONTROL contains a selection of articles presented at 2001 IMA Summer Program with the same title. We would like to thank Christopher B. Croke (University of Penn sylva nia), Irena Lasiecka (University of Virginia), Gunther Uhlmann (University of Washington), and Michael S. Vogelius (Rutgers University) for their ex cellent work as organizers of the two-week summer workshop and for editing the volume. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Founda tion for their support of the IMA. Series Editors Douglas N. Arnold, Director of the IMA Fadil Santosa, Deputy Director of the IMA v PREFACE This volume contains a selected number of articles based on lectures delivered at the IMA 2001 Summer Program on "Geometric Methods in Inverse Problems and PDE Control. " The focus of this program was some common techniques used in the study of inverse coefficient problems and control problems for partial differential equations, with particular emphasis on their strong relation to fundamental problems of geometry. Inverse coef ficient problems for partial differential equations arise in many application areas, for instance in medical imaging, nondestructive testing, and geophys ical prospecting. Control problems involving partial differential equations may arise from the need to optimize a given performance criterion, e. g. , to dampen out undesirable vibrations of a structure , or more generally, to obtain a prescribed behaviour of the dynamics.

This volume consists ofsurvey articles on current topics in computational wave prop agation and inverse problems, written by leading experts in their respective fields. The idea to compile such a volume arose in conjunction with the LMS Durham Symposium on Computational Methods for Wave Propagation in Direct Scattering held at the University of Durham from 15th-25th July 2002, which we jointly or ganised. The meeting, attended by 70 participants from the UK and overseas, was structured around a number of short, three lecture, survey courses on a range of top ics on computational wave propagation and inverse problems beginning at the level of a graduate student. We were delighted to secure the participation of distinguished international researchers to present these lectures. We felt that it would be valuable to record this material for the benefit of a wider audience, and the idea was hatched that the individual lecturers should be invited to contribute a survey article. Fortunately, many of the speakers not only agreed to undertake this arduous task, but produced what we hope you will agree are the high quality contributions found in this volume. Finally, it is a pleasure to thank the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of Great Britain and the London Mathematical Society for providing the generous support that allowed the meeting to take place. Mathematical And Statistical Methods For Imaging written by Habib Ammari and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-20 with Mathematics categories.

This volume contains the proceedings of the NIMS Thematic Workshop on Mathematical and Statistical Methods for Imaging, which was held from August 10-13, 2010, at Inha University, Incheon, Korea. The goal of this volume is to give the reader a deep and unified understanding of the field of imaging and of the analytical and statistical tools used in imaging. It offers a good overview of the current status of the field and of directions for further research. Challenging problems are addressed from analytical, numerical, and statistical perspectives. The articles are devoted to four main areas: analytical investigation of robustness; hypothesis testing and resolution analysis, particularly for anomaly detection; new efficient imaging techniques; and the effects of anisotropy, dissipation, or attenuation in imaging.

Inverse Problems Multi Scale Analysis And Effective Medium Theory written by Habib Ammari and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Mathematics categories.

Recent developments in inverse problems, multi-scale analysis and effective medium theory reveal that these fields share several fundamental concepts. This book is the proceedings of the research conference, ``Workshop in Seoul: Inverse Problems, Multi-Scale Analysis and Homogenization,'' held at Seoul National University, June 22-24, 2005. It highlights the benefits of sharing ideas among these areas, of merging the expertise of scientists working there, and of directing interest towards challenging issues such as imaging nanoscience and biological imaging. Contributions are written by prominent experts and are of interest to researchers and graduate students interested in partial differential equations and applications.

The Handbook of Mathematical Methods in Imaging provides a comprehensive treatment of the mathematical techniques used in imaging science. The material is grouped into two central themes, namely, Inverse Problems (Algorithmic Reconstruction) and Signal and Image Processing. Each section within the themes covers applications (modeling), mathematics, numerical methods (using a case example) and open questions. Written by experts in the area, the presentation is mathematically rigorous. The entries are cross-referenced for easy navigation through connected topics. Available in both print and electronic forms, the handbook is enhanced by more than 150 illustrations and an extended bibliography. It will benefit students, scientists and researchers in applied mathematics. Engineers and computer scientists working in imaging will also find this handbook useful.
