This book explains what quantum states of light look like. Of special interest, a single photon state is explained by using a wave picture, showing that it corresponds to the complementarity of a quantum. Also explained is how light waves are created by photons, again corresponding to the complementarity of a quantum. The author shows how an optical wave is created by superposition of a "vacuum" and a single photon as a typical example. Moreover, squeezed states of light are explained as "longitudinal" waves of light and Schrödinger's cat states as macroscopic superposition states.

Single-photon generation and detection is at the forefront of modern optical physics research. This book is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the current status of single-photon techniques and research methods in the spectral region from the visible to the infrared. The use of single photons, produced on demand with well-defined quantum properties, offers an unprecedented set of capabilities that are central to the new area of quantum information and are of revolutionary importance in areas that range from the traditional, such as high sensitivity detection for astronomy, remote sensing, and medical diagnostics, to the exotic, such as secretive surveillance and very long communication links for data transmission on interplanetary missions. The goal of this volume is to provide researchers with a comprehensive overview of the technology and techniques that are available to enable them to better design an experimental plan for its intended purpose. The book will be broken into chapters focused specifically on the development and capabilities of the available detectors and sources to allow a comparative understanding to be developed by the reader along with and idea of how the field is progressing and what can be expected in the near future. Along with this technology, we will include chapters devoted to the applications of this technology, which is in fact much of the driver for its development. This is set to become the go-to reference for this field. Covers all the basic aspects needed to perform single-photon experiments and serves as the first reference to any newcomer who would like to produce an experimental design that incorporates the latest techniques Provides a comprehensive overview of the current status of single-photon techniques and research methods in the spectral region from the visible to the infrared, thus giving broad background that should enable newcomers to the field to make rapid progress in gaining proficiency Written by leading experts in the field, among which, the leading Editor is recognized as having laid down the roadmap, thus providing the reader with an authenticated and reliable source

In this thesis we present an optical and electronic setup that is capable of performing coherent state tomography. We fully characterize it in order to verify whether or not it will be capable to perform non-demolition homodyne detection of squeezed light in a high-finesse cavity QED setup with an ensemble of Cesium atoms coupled to the cavity. After quantifying sources of noise, the photodiode efficiency, we perform a series of measurements of low photon number coherent states and compare them against the standard quantum limit. We discuss a variety of technical challenges encountered in such systems and some methods to overcome them. Lastly, we test the apparatus' ability to do quantum state tomography and quantum state reconstruction by reconstructing the density matrix and Wigner functions for low photon-number coherent states.

The term 'nonclassical states' refers to the quantum states that cannot be produced in the usual sources of light, such as lasers or lamps, rather than those requiring more sophisticated apparatus for their production. Theory of Non-classical States of Light describes the current status of the theory of nonclassical states of light including many new and important results as well as introductory material and the history of the subject. The authors concentrate on the most important types of nonclassical states, namely squeezed, even/odd ('Schrodinger cat') and binomial states, including their generalizations. However, a review of other types of nonclassical is also given in the introduction, and methods for generating nonclassical states on various processes of light-matter interaction, their phase-space description, and the time evolution of nonclassical states in these processes is presented in separate chapters. This contributed volume contains all of the necessary formulae and references required to gain a good understanding of the principles and current status of the field. It will provide a valuable information resource for advanced students and researchers in quantum physics.

Single photons are important states for quantum information processing and fundamental research. These applications require efficient single-photon generation on demand. In this work asingle-photon device based on single InP and CdSe quantum dots is presented. Intensity correlation measurements were used to verify the single photon emission in pulsed and continuous operation. By using Fourier spectroscopy, the coherence length and spectral bandwidth of the single-photon states was measured. The observation of cross-correlations between several spectral lines revealed the existence of multi-photon cascades and gave information about their decay dynamics. The efficient separation of adjacent photons from a two-level cascade allowed their independent use and an effective doubling of the photon generation rate, similar to multiplexing in classical information processing. For the first time, multiplexing on a single-photon level could be demonstrated in a quantum key distribution experiment.

Technologies based on quantum mechanics promise to revolutionize the collection, processing and communication of information. However, due to the fragility of quantum coherence, complex quantum states can only exist in highly isolated and stable environments. One suitable environment is that of a quantum photonic chip. Quantum integrated photonics seeks to generate, process and detect complex quantum states inside a photonic chip. This thesis presents theory and experimental verification of novel approaches for the integration of various functionalities into quantum photonic chips in a scalable way. As such, this thesis encompasses a broad area of physics including quantum optics and nonlinear photonics. The results presented in this thesis have applications in the areas of quantum enhanced measurement, communication and information processing. In particular we develop the theory and experimentally demonstrate flexible on-chip sources of spatially entangled photons, the state of which can be reconfigured alloptically. We show how such techniques could enable the realization of simple cluster state quantum computing algorithms using spatially encoded two-photon states. Furthermore, we suggest new and practical approaches for the efficient characterization of mass produced nonlinear quantum photonic chips. Finally we develop and experimentally demonstrate a scalable method for the full quantum state tomography of multi-photon states on-chip. Importantly this technique only requires a linearly increasing number of single photon detectors relative to the number of photons in the state being characterized, and is also highly compatible with on-chip single photon detectors.
