Research has been in progress since July 1970 to determine which geophysical and remote-sensing methods offer the most promising results for detecting subsurface cavities and what might be done to further develop them. Through extensive field tests, it has been determined that none of the standard electrical resistivity procedures give consistently good results. As a result of the initial field testing, a new process of data interpretation has been developed for one specific electrode configuration. Cavities less than 10 feet in diameter and at the depths greater than 100 feet were located. Research is continuing to adapt this process for locating water- or mud-filled cavities.

Handbook Of Geophysical Cavity Locating Techniques With Emphasis On Electrical Resistivity written by Keith G. Kirk and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with Caves categories.

This handbook is primarily a description of the methodology of using earth resistivity techniques for locating cavities. Only a small portion of the handbook will be devoted to the theoretical considerations behind these techniques. However, the annotated bibliography cites ample literature to satisfy the needs of the theoretician. Along with earth resistivity techniques, several geophysical techniques will be examined in lesser detail with respect to cavity location. Micro-gravity, high-resolution seismic reflection profiling, and ground probing radar were selected because they show good success rates in cavity detection. High-resolution seismic profiling shows particularly good promise as an effective tool in cavity location. Techniques in photo interpretation will also be discussed with regard to possible cavity location.

Research has been in progress since July 1970 at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station to determine these methods which offer the most promising results for detecting subsurface cavities and what might be done to further develop them. Through extensive field tests, it has been determined that none of the standard electrical resistivity procedures give consistently good results. However, as a result of the initial field testing, a new process of data interpretation has been developed for one specific electrode configuration. The modified procedure produced excellent results during field tests over known cavities in Indiana and Missouri. Cavities less than 10 ft in diameter and at depths greater than 100 ft were located. To date, this new procedure has been applied only to air-filled cavities. However, research is continuing to adapt this process for locating water- or mud-filled cavities.

Detection Of Subsurface Cavities By Surface Remote Sensing Techniques written by L. S. Fountain and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1975 with Electromagnetic measurements categories.

The research is part of a program underway to evaluate remote sensing instrumentation and methods for locating subsurface cavities that can cause serious highway construction and maintenance problems. Three methods of subsurface cavity detection based on different geophysical techniques were experimentally evaluated, including ground-penetrating radar, gravity profiling, and earth resistivity profiling. Tests were conducted at three sites having different geological environments. Verification tests showed all methods to be capable of locating air-filled cavities.

The purpose of this work was to experimentally explore the use of earth resistivity measurements using a pole-dipole electrode array in the detection of deep tunnels in a granite environment. Measurements both on the ground surface and in drilled holes were evaluated. Tests were conducted at two sites existing mine adits or tunnels, one at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine site and one at a Gold Hill, Colorado, site. The mine adits with an approximate 10 x 10-foot (3 x 3-m) cross section were successfully detected from the surface at both locations through overburden thicknesses ranging from 30 to 81 feet (9.1 to 24.7 m). Other geological features of the terrain were also identified by the measurements. Successful detection was also made from a dry borehole that was 16 feet (4.9 m) horizontally displaced from the adit at the adit level. Although near surface geological features produce strong resistivity anomalies, they can be identified.
