Truth Error And Criminal Law written by Larry Laudan and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-05 with Philosophy categories.

Beginning with the premise that the principal function of a criminal trial is to find out the truth about a crime, Larry Laudan examines the rules of evidence and procedure that would be appropriate if the discovery of the truth were, as higher courts routinely claim, the overriding aim of the criminal justice system. Laudan mounts a systematic critique of existing rules and procedures that are obstacles to that quest. He also examines issues of error distribution by offering the first integrated analysis of the various mechanisms - the standard of proof, the benefit of the doubt, the presumption of innocence and the burden of proof - for implementing society's view about the relative importance of the errors that can occur in a trial.

This book is spent for those who have a desire to learn, or at least to think about things in different ways, and who consider themselves seekers of truth. It is also for those who have a nagging feeling that there is more to their own nature and the nature of their God than what they have been taught. In addition, I believe it's possible to acquire an accurate understanding of the way things really are, the fundamental essence of things with all of our inaccurate perceptions of them stripped away and when a person receives that kind of understanding there is an obligation to share it with others. You will probably enjoy this book if you sometimes ask yourself questions like the following: - Did God create evil? - If our physical body and spirit are reunited following our death through resurrection, what is the purpose of a physical body in the next life? - Why does God allow so much evil to take place here on this earth? - What is the human species capable of becoming/evolving to following generations of natural selection and continuous improvement in our pool of knowledge? - How are the principles of free will or agency and obedience not contradictory or in conflict? - How can we tell the difference between truth and non-truth or error?

Quantitative thinking is our inclination to view natural and everyday phenomena through a lens of measurable events, with forecasts, odds, predictions, and likelihood playing a dominant part. The Error of Truth recounts the astonishing and unexpected tale of how quantitative thinking came to be, and its rise to primacy in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additionally, it considers how seeing the world through a quantitative lens has shaped our perception of the world we live in, and explores the lives of the individuals behind its early establishment. This worldview was unlike anything humankind had before, and it came about because of a momentous human achievement: we had learned how to measure uncertainty. Probability as a science was conceptualised. As a result of probability theory, we now had correlations, reliable predictions, regressions, the bellshaped curve for studying social phenomena, and the psychometrics of educational testing. Significantly, these developments happened during a relatively short period in world history— roughly, the 130-year period from 1790 to 1920, from about the close of the Napoleonic era, through the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolutions, to the end of World War I. At which time, transportation had advanced rapidly, due to the invention of the steam engine, and literacy rates had increased exponentially. This brief period in time was ready for fresh intellectual activity, and it gave a kind of impetus for the probability inventions. Quantification is now everywhere in our daily lives, such as in the ubiquitous microchip in smartphones, cars, and appliances; in the Bayesian logic of artificial intelligence, as well as applications in business, engineering, medicine, economics, and elsewhere. Probability is the foundation of quantitative thinking. The Error of Truth tells its story— when, why, and how it happened.

Finding And Confirming Truth written by John Pletz and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Philosophy categories.

Is truth a word we use only to affirm a statement, or is it also something more? In Finding and Confirming Truth, John S, Pletz explains that truth is more than mere affirmation. It also is the conclusion reached when we have effectively confirmed that an assertion accurately depicts the facts that it describes. Following a delineation of the major types of inferences used in confirming the truth of statements and the justifications for each of them, Pletz discusses the process used in identifying and verifying factual truth. That process includes the critical step of assessing the degree of certainty we have in a confirmed assertion, which the author contends must be ascertained before we should conclude that any statement is true. Finally, Pletz employs this confirmation framework and process in seeking the truth of the concept of truth itself. --Book Jacket.
