Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich BWL - Handel und Distribution, Note: 2,3, Universität des Saarlandes (H.I.MA.), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Kleine und mittlere Unternehmen (KMU) besitzen eine zentrale volkswirtschaftliche, aber auch gesellschaftspolitische Bedeutung in jeder Marktwirtschaft. In Deutschland beschäftigen sie rund 70 % aller Arbeitnehmer, tätigen 41 % aller steuerpflichtigen Umsätze und besitzen einen Anteil von 49 % an der Bruttowertschöpfung der Unternehmen. Jedoch bilden KMU nicht nur das Rückgrat der deutschen Wirtschaft. Vielmehr wirken sie stabilisierend auch auf die gesamte Gesellschaft, indem Unternehmerinnen und Unternehmer dieser Firmen eigenes Kapital risikobewusst einsetzen, eigenverantwortlich handeln sowie in vielfältiger Weise soziales, kulturelles und gesellschaftliches Engagement zeigen. Eine evidente Herausforderung für KMU stellt der fortschreitende und stabile Prozess der Internationalisierung dar. Durch die Liberalisierung des grenzüberschreitenden Waren- und Kapitalaustauschs und die wachsende internationale Verflechtung wirtschaftlicher Prozesse können Unternehmen zunehmend standortungebunden agieren, d.h. weltweit Waren beschaffen, produzieren und absetzen. Der steigende Wettbewerbsdruck auf nationalen Märkten durch internationale Konkurrenz, Sättigungstendenzen als auch eine verstärkte Konkurrenz um die international günstigsten Rahmenbedingungen und Standorte bewegen bzw. zwingen KMU dazu, eine Ausweitung der Unternehmensaktivitäten auf internationaler Ebene zur Sicherstellung oder Verbesserung ihrer Wettbewerbsposition in Erwägung zu ziehen. Dabei ist das Ausmaß des auf die KMU wirkenden Internationalisierungsdrucks fallabhängig.
