Erstmals werden die Auswirkungen politischer Krisen in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit bis hin zur Ölkrise 1973 auf den Ölmarkt systematisch untersucht, wobei die DDR gleichermaßen Berücksichtigung findet.

Ausgehend von den Ölakten des ehemaligen Reichsamtes für Bodenforschung und der Person des Erdölgeologen und späteren Vierjahresplanbeauftragten für die Förderung der Erdölgewinnung, Alfred Bentz, zeichnet Titus Kockel die komplexen in- und ausländischen Ölinteressen und wechselnden Allianzen nach, die im Deutschen Reich zwischen 1928 und 1938 auf die deutsche Ölpolitik einwirkten und dabei eine erstaunliche Dynamik entwickelten. Die diachrone Betrachtungsweise läßt ein Bild der Ölpolitik des frühen Dritten Reiches entstehen, in dem die Brüche deutlicher zutage treten als die Kontinuitäten. Hitler änderte, so weist der Autor nach, seine Ölpolitik mehrmals grundlegend.
