Die Niederlande waren für deutsche Juden während des Nationalsozialismus ein Land der Hoffnung, eines neuen Alltags, der enttäuschten Erwartungen und der erneuten Verfolgung Die antisemitische Politik des "Dritten Reiches" veranlasste in den 1930er-Jahren Hundertausende Juden zur Flucht aus Deutschland. Zu den ersten Exilländern gehörten die benachbarten Niederlande, wo die meisten jedoch nur eine Zuflucht auf Zeit fanden. Der Aufbau einer neuen Existenz gestaltete sich oftmals schwierig. Viele zogen weiter. Diejenigen aber, die diesen Schritt nicht gehen konnten oder wollten, waren nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht im Mai 1940 erneut der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung ausgeliefert. Tausende wurden in den folgenden Jahren deportiert und ermordet. Christine Kausch nimmt das Leben der jüdischen Flüchtlinge in den Jahren 1933 bis 1945 in den Blick und analysiert auf Basis hunderter Egodokumente sowie zahlreicher weiterer Quellen die individuellen und kollektiven Erfahrungen der Geflüchteten. Die Autorin untersucht, wie die Menschen im Nachbarland aufgenommen wurden, wie sie die erneute Verfolgung erlebten und wie sie auf die jeweiligen Umstände reagierten. Die Studie bietet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur jüdischen, niederländischen und deutschen Geschichte.

Durch die Exilverlage Querido und Allert de Lange wurde Amsterdam zum Zentrum der Produktion und des Vertriebs der Exilliteratur. Die niederländisch-deutschen Verflechtungen waren international vernetzt, aber der Markt für die Bücher innerhalb der Niederlande war relativ groß und niederländische Übersetzer und Rezensenten bemühten sich um ihre Verbreitung. Einige Autoren ließen sich langjährig in Holland nieder. Fallbeispiele einzelner Schriftsteller und Verleger bilden ein Gewebe von Lebens- und Rezeptionsgeschichten bis heute. Durch die verlängerte Zeitperspektive unterscheidet sich dieses Buch von der bisherigen Exilforschung. Es zeigt Veränderungen in der Wahrnehmung der Exilliteratur unter sich wandelnden gesellschaftlichen und politischen Bedingungen. Durch die Verknüpfung individueller Geschichten wurde versucht, einer modernen Darstellung der Literaturgeschichte gerecht zu werden.
