ANMERKUNGEN ZUR ENTWICKLUNG UND ZUM PRAXISBEZUG DER DEUTSCHEN SOZIOLOGIE Von Giinther Liischen In diesem Sonderheft werden Fragen der inhaltlichen, methodologischen und organisa torischen Entwicklung der deutschen Soziologie seit 1945 im Zusammenhang mit Ideengeschichte und Praxisbezug verfolgt sowie in der Bewertung und Analyse der ge genwartigen Situation ebenfalls programmatische Diskussionen iiber ihre kiinftige Ent wicklung eingeleitet. Ein von der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung im Rahmen ihres Schwerpunktes Wissenschafts forschung gefordertes Projekt "Entwicklungsrichtungen der deutschen Soziologie", das unter Leitung des Herausgebers an der Universitat Illinois abgewickelt wird, war der auBere AnlaB fiir die Durchfiihrung einer Arbeitstagung im Mai 1978 in derWerner-Rei mers-Stiftung, Bad Homburg, deren Ergebnisse die Grundlage fiir die Beitrage dieses Son derheftes liefern. Angeregt wurden solche Bemiihungen zur Analyse der deutschen Sozio logie durch den Tatbestand, daB die wissenschaftliche Offentlichkeit im internationa len und namentlich angelsachsischen Raum wenig Notiz von den eigenstandigen Lei stungen der deutschen Soziologie genommen hat. So weit ein solches Interesse bestand, 1 orientierte es sich vor allem an einzelnen Fachvertretern und an der kritischen Theo rie, die in ihrer sozial-und gesellschaftskritischen Orientierung einerseits bestatigte, was man von deutscher Soziologie ohnehin erwartete, oder andererseits fiir eine bis weilen als qualitativ oder humanistisch bezeichnete Soziologie im eigenen Land Anre 2 gung und Rationalisierung brachte . Es geht in diesem Sinne also bei dem erwahnten Projekt urn eine Erweiterung des Verstandnisses und Wissens iiber deutsche Sozio logie

Sociology in Austria has been frequently affected by political developments in the country. This first history of sociology in Austria examines the impact of the break-up of the Habsburg Empire and of two consecutive dictatorships, which destroyed academic freedom by means of forced migration and imprisonment. Even after 1945 the re-established Second Republic did not dismiss professors promoted during the Nazi period, and failed to invite exiled academics to return home. The author argues that the result has been a continuation of favouritism and conformism, with compliance to political regimes sanctioned at the expense of meritocracy and that in the light of this chequered past we should celebrate instances of de-institutionalization.
