Die meisten Publikationen, die sich dem Schicksal der Juden in Deutschland annehmen, haben primär den Zeitraum zwischen 1939 und 1945 im Blick. Dieses Buch ist anders: Es setzt weit früher an und widmet sich vornehmlich der Frage nach der Entstehung des deutsch-jüdischen Dilemmas. Die beiden Autoren, ein Deutscher und ein Jude, begaben sich dazu auf Spurensuche und legten frühe gemeinsame Wurzeln frei. Sie entdeckten über die Jahrhunderte viel Verbindendes, aber ebenso manches, das trennte. Alles in allem – das wird hier besonders deutlich – war es ein Weg der Symbiose, der wechselseitigen fruchtbaren Ergänzung, dokumentiert durch zahlreiche Errungenschaften und Auszeichnungen in Wissenschaft, Kunst und Politik. Um die Wende vom 19. ins 20. Jahrhundert waren Juden in Deutschland weitestgehend assimiliert; sie fühlten sich voll und ganz als Deutsche, wie vielerlei Quellen und Zeugnisse belegen. Einzigartig wird die Zusammenstellung durch zeitgeschichtliche Kommentare jüdischer Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, herausgegeben von 1850 bis zu ihrem Verbot 1938, welche im Anhang einzeln porträtiert werden. Zugleich ist das vorliegende Werk eine Gesellschaftsstudie, die anhand historischer Entwicklungen aufzeigt, wie sich totalitäre Ideologien schleichend entfalten, warum Hass, Hetze und Radikalismus gleich welcher Couleur stets ins Verderben führen. Die gebundene Ausgabe des vorliegenden Werkes ist u. a. im Bestand der israelischen Nationalbibliothek Yad Vashem, der Oxford University, der Pariser Sorbonne, der Library of Congress und des Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington sowie diverser US-Hochschulen, darunter Berkeley, Harvard, Princeton und Stanford.

The German authorities used the start of the war on 1 September 1939 as an opportunity to intensify the campaign against the supposed enemies within – primarily the Jews. Thousands of Jews were expelled to Poland and France in initial deportations. Emigration or flight became virtually impossible. In February 1941 a Jewish woman from Vienna feared for her parents: ‘We know now that there is no age limit, everyone is being sent away, little children, the very old, even sick people are taken from the hospital and transported somewhere, into uncertainty, into misery.’ The volume documents the increasing isolation of the German and Czech Jews and the plans and ambitions of their persecutors in the period leading up to the systematic deportations. Volume XXIII of the distinguished annual Studies in Contemporary Jewry explores the role of sports in modern Jewish history. The centrality of sports in modern life--in popular and even in high culture, in economic life, in the media, in international and national politics, and in forging ethnic identities--can hardly be exaggerated, but in the field of Jewish studies this subject has been somewhat neglected, at least until recently. Students of American Jewish history, for example, often emphasize the role of sports in the Americanization of the immigrants, while students of Jewish nationalism pay closer attention to its appeal for the regeneration of the Jewish nation, as well as the creation of a new, healthy, Jewish body. The essays brought together in Jews and the Sporting Life expand the body of knowledge about the place sports occupied, and continue to occupy, in Jewish life. They examine the connection between sports and Jewish nationalism, particularly Zionism, and how organized Jewish sports have been an agent of nation-building.
