Ulrich Weisstein’s collection of 21 essays offers a comparative study of Expressionism as a Modernist movement whose dynamic core lay in Germany and Austria-Hungary, but which transformed artistic practices in other European countries. Bereits die zeitliche Einordnung ist strittig. Viele Literaturwissenschaftler definieren ein expressionistisches Jahrzehnt von ca. 1910 bis 1920. Andere datieren das Ende des Expressionismus dagegen auf ca. 1925, da viele der großen Anthologien und auch Gesamtausgaben expressionistischer Dichter erst zu Beginn der 30er Jahre veröffentlicht werden. Geistesgeschichtlich ist der Expressionismus eine Reaktion der jungen Dichter gegen Naturalismus, Impressionismus, Neuromantik und Symbolismus. · Expressionisten wollen den Ausdruck des Innen künstlerisch wiedergeben. Einen Anhaltspunkt für die Definition des Expressionismus bietet Kurt Pinthus 1919 und fasst darin den Expressionismus als problemgeschichtliches Phänomen auf. Er ist der ,,künstlerische Ausdruck und zugleich Bewältigungsversuch einer bestimmten Bewusstseinslage, in die sich eine in der Großstadt lebende intellektuelle Jugend gegen Ende des Kaiserreichs gedrängt fühlt". Diese Bewusstseinslage ist von den Erfahrungen der Moderne geprägt. Die Dichtergeneration der Expressionisten lebt in einer Zeit der rasanten Veränderungen, des Umbruchs und der Verunsicherung: Zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts setzt auch in Deutschland verstärkt die Industrialisierung ein und es kommt zu einer zunehmenden Automatisierung in allen Lebensbereichen. Die Fabriken bieten Arbeitsplätze und so ziehen die Menschen vermehrt vom Land in die Stadt: Die modernen Großstädte entstehen. Durch technische Neuerungen, wie beispielsweise Flugzeuge, Straßenbahnen usw. herrscht plötzlich eine wesentlich höhere Mobilität als je zuvor. Das gesteigerte Lebenstempo wird als faszinierend aber auch erschreckend empfunden: ,,Zusammengeballt in zwei Jahrzehnten erlebten wir mehr als zwei Jahrtausende vor uns. Was haben wir noch zu erwarten, zu erleben? Vermögen wir uns noch zu wundern?". Zu den technischen Neuerungen der Zeit gehören beispielsweise auch Film und Funk. Sie markieren den Anfang der modernen Massenkommunikation und Massenkultur. Gerade das Kino inspiriert die Expressionisten zu zahlreichen Gedichten. [...]
