Mit diesem Band wird in dem seit 1995 erscheinenden ,,Deutschen Schriftsteller-Lexikon 1830-1880" die vorletzte Lücke geschlossen. Er erfasst in 53 Hauptartikeln und 1300 Kurzartikeln wiederum einen Ausschnitt aus dem reichen und bunten literarischen Leben des 19. Jahrhunderts. Neben den bekannten, noch gelesenen Autoren Wilhelm Raabe, Fritz Reuter und Peter Rosegger werden Schriftsteller erfolgreicher Bücher dargestellt, wie beispielsweise Oskar von Redwitz mit seinem Versepos ,,Amaranth" (1849), das 46 Auflagen bis 1921 erfuhr oder Otto Roquette mit seinem idyllischen Märchen ,,Waldmeisters Brautfahrt" (1851), dessen 100. Auflage noch 1924 erschien. In wenigen Jahren waren die Leiden der 1848er verdrängt, die ihr Leben für die Ideale von Recht und Freiheit eingesetzt hatten, so August Peters, Ludwig Pfau, Hermann Püttmann, die entweder im Gefängnis saßen oder in der Emigration darbten. Dichter des Vormärz wie Robert Prutz und Gustav Pfizer hatten resigniert. Aber das Leben ging weiter und im literarischen Alltag gab es unter den Autoren auch die selbstbewusster gewordenen schreibenden Frauen wie Julie Pfannenschmidt, Luise von Ploennies, Elise Polko, Franziska von Reitzenstein. Manche Schriftsteller spielten im öffentlichen Leben eine Rolle, so der Kulturhistoriker Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl, der Kunstschriftsteller Ludwig Pietsch, der Hofmarschall Franz Graf Pocci, der Theaterintendant Gustav zu Putlitz, der Denkmalpfleger Eduard Paulus, der Publizist Julius Rodenberg. Mit der industriellen Herstellung erlebte das Buchwesen und so das Lesen einen gewaltigen Aufschwung. Bücher wurden populär und den Dichtern setzte man Denkmäler, so Adolf Pichler in Innsbruck, Emil Rittershaus in Elberfeld und Ernst Pasqué in Alsbach an der Bergstraße. Die von Paul Raabe und Thomas Lindenberg erarbeiteten Lexikon-Artikel regen zur erneuten kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit Biographie und Werk an.

The disparagement of multilingualism is a European development of the 18th and 19th centuries in which one national language and national literature were advocated, established and institutionalised. Multilingual writers made use of the creative potential of several languages even then. However, they often adapted to an increasingly monolingual book market, which made their individual multilingualism invisible. This is evident in literary historiography which established a monolingual national canon. Researching hidden multilingualism is often difficult: since multilingual texts by multilingual writers were often not published or were published in a monolingual version, sources are scarce. Literary histories of the time often do not mention multilingualism. Furthermore, many multilingual writers were members of minority groups (women, Jewish, Non-European) and thus often neglected. The volume offers methods and theories to systematically approach this hidden material, as well as case studies on authors and national literatures in a multilingual context. It thus contributes to the restructuring of a multilingual transnational literary history that is applicable to different philologies.
