In „Deutschland im Eiszeitalter“ schildert der Wiesbadener Wissenschaftsautor Ernst Probst den wechselvollen Verlauf der erdgeschichtlichen Epoche von 2,6 Millionen v. Chr. - ca. 11.700 v. Chr., die durch starke Klimaschwankungen geprägt wurde. Einerseits gab es in diesem Zeitabschnitt, der Eiszeitalter oder Pleistozän genannt wird, Warmzeiten, während denen zwischen Nordseeküste und Alpenrand ähnliche Verhältnisse wie heute in Afrika herrschten. Andererseits rückten in Eiszeiten die Gletscher aus dem Norden bis in die Gegend von Dresden, Erfurt und Recklinghausen sowie aus dem Süden bis Biberach an der Riss, Fürstenfeldbruck und Burghausen an der Salzach vor und begruben die Landschaft unter einem dicken Eispanzer. Während der Warmphasen schwammen Flusspferde im Rhein und anderen Flüssen. In den Kaltphasen lebten dagegen zottelige Mammute, Fellnashörner und Moschusochsen auf dem Festland. Außerdem existierten während der Eiszeit zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten die „Heidelberg-Menschen“, Neandertaler sowie die ersten anatomisch modernen Menschen.
