The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

It introduces scholars and students to the new concept of ‘postmigration’, offering a review of the origin of the concept (in Berlin) and how it has taken on a variety of meanings and works in different ways within different national, cultural and disciplinary contexts. The authors explore postmigrant theory in relation to the visual arts, theater, film and literature as well as the representation of migration and cultural diversity in cultural institutions, offering case studies of postmigrant analyses of contemporary works of art from Europe (mainly Denmark, Germany and Great Britain).

Un German written by Fatima El-Tayeb and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-15 with History categories.
Un/German is a powerful intervention in the ongoing debates over national identity, migration, and collective memory in Europe. Against the backdrop of the 2015 "refugee crisis," Fatima El-Tayeb argues that Europe's internal fractures were deflected through recurring crises, casting racialized populations as the external menace against which the continent could unite. First published in German in 2016, the book critically examines how Germany's reaction to the arrival of nearly one million refugees—initially framed as a "culture of welcome" but one that rapidly turned to hostility—was not an anomaly but part of a broader European pattern. Drawing on public memory and its material expressions in post–1989 Germany, Un/German brings into sharp relief the disparities in how Europe remembers its fascist, socialist, and colonial pasts. El-Tayeb highlights Black, Muslim, and Roma artists and activists who disrupted public commemorations intended to reinforce dominant narratives, arguing that these disturbances brought to the fore unresolved tensions in German collective memory. In doing so, El-Tayeb reveals the limits of Europe's self-conception as pluralistic and progressive, while also opening the door to new, more inclusive ways of imagining European identity.

Like no other country’s Germany’s identity is shaped by its history or rather by the critical engagement with this history. The book traces the most important public debates on history since the new millennium thereby adding a mosaic of topics and perspectives to the memorial landscape of the Berlin Republic. The book is divided into five parts, "German Empire and the question of continuity", "National Socialism and World War II", "The Holocaust and Multidirectional Memory", "GDR/BRD/Unification" to "The Berlin Republic. Marginalization and new Master Narratives", and addresses them from different biographical backgrounds, thereby creating a mosaic of topics and perspectives.

Reflexivities And Knowledge Production In Migration Studies written by Janine Dahinden and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-10-30 with Social Science categories.
This open access book brings together cutting-edge work on reflexive approaches within migration studies and emphasizes the boundedness and political character of knowledge production. Beyond presenting a state-of-the-art of the problematic aspects of knowledge production in migration studies, this volume is innovative insofar as the contributions all formulate alternatives. They should lead to transform knowledge production in relation to migration and therefore contribute to alter our ways to do research and tackle established power relations. By discussing a diverse range of topical subjects – among others, epistemology, power, ethnocentrism, racism, decoloniality, gender and methodology – this volume is a great resource to students, to junior and senior academics in migration studies and social sciences more general as well as to policy-makers in European countries.

The arrival in 2015 and 2016 of over one million asylum seekers and refugees in Germany had major social consequences and gave rise to extensive debates about the nature of cultural diversity and collective life. This volume examines the responses and implications of what was widely seen as the most significant and contested social change since German reunification in 1990. It combines in-depth studies based on anthropological fieldwork with analyses of the longer trajectories of migration and social change. Its original conclusions have significance not only for Germany but also for the understanding of diversity and difference more widely.
