Die Deutsche Hanse ist immer wieder Gegenstand lebhafter Anteilnahme weiterer Kreise gewesen, mehr als dies sonst historischen Erscheinungsformen zukommt. Die Ursache ist darin zu sehen, daß sie von ihrer Gründung an zeitlose und vielfältige Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten gewann. Es kennzeichnet die eigenartige Aufgabe der Hanse, daß sie ihre Ziele mit den friedlichen Mitteln des Austausches, der Organisation und der techni schen Entwicklung zu erreichen imstande war. Was auf den Gebieten der Markterschließung, der Absatzlenkung, des Schiffbaus und des Waren verkehrs dabei geleistet wurde, ist allgemein bekannt. Nicht weniger wirk sam war die geistige Durchdringung aller dieser Lebenszweige, von der systematischen Verschriftlichung in den Kaufmannskontoren bis zur Rechts schöpfung in den Ratsurteilen, die den ganzen Einzugsbereich des Lübischen Stadtrechtes bis weit nach Osteuropa hinein umfassen konnte. Bei dieser räumlich umspannenden, durch Jahrhunderte wirksamen, in ihren Ausläu fern und Folgeerscheinungen noch heute spürbaren und in mancherlei For men bis zur Gegenwart lebendigen Tätigkeit des Städtebundes der Hanse zeigt sich als ein sehr wesentliches, gleichbleibendes Merkmal die Mittler Rolle in den Beziehungen zwischen der damaligen östlichen und westlichen Welt, der die Hanse in beiden Teilen zugehörte.
