As simple Web access to data housed on corporate mainframes is fast becoming a core business requirement, mainframe programmers need to learn how to develop Java applications to keep pace with growing corporate needs. Focusing on concepts familiar to mainframe programmers, this book gives step-by-step guidance on how to use Java to access file and database structures common to mainframe environments. After comparing Java and mainframe languages such as COBOL and PL/I, Marco goes on to cover Java implementations for IBM's OS/390 and advanced Java programming techniques, including Java classes and EJB. A must-read for anyone who needs to provide users with access to business data via a Web interface, this book is a logical companion to System 390 JCL (0-471-28309-6), our bestselling mainframe programming book now in its fourth edition.

This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides students of information systems technology with the background knowledge and skills necessary to begin using the basic facilities of a mainframe computer. It is the first in a planned series of book designed to introduce students to mainframe concepts and help prepare them for a career in large systems computing. For optimal learning, students are assumed to have successfully completed an introductory course in computer system concepts, such as computer organization and architecture, operating systems, data management, or data communications. They should also have successfully completed courses in one or more programming languages, and be PC literate. This book can also be used as a prerequisite for courses in advanced topics or for internships and special studies. It is not intended to be a complete text covering all aspects of mainframe operation or a reference book that discusses every feature and option of the mainframe facilities. Others who will benefit from this book include experienced data processing professionals who have worked with non-mainframe platforms, or who are familiar with some aspects of the mainframe but want to become knowledgeable with other facilities and benefits of the mainframe environment.

This IBM® Redbooks® publication provides information about the new Java virtual machine (JVM) server technology in IBM CICS® Transaction Server for z/OS® V4.2. We begin by outlining the many advantages of its multi-threaded operation over the pooled JVM function of earlier releases. The Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) is described and we highlight the benefits OSGi brings to both development and deployment. Details are then provided about how to configure and use the new JVM server environment. Examples are included of the deployment process, which takes a Java application from the workstation Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) with the IBM CICS Explorer® software development kit (SDK) plug-in, through the various stages up to execution in a stand-alone CICS region and an IBM CICSPlex® environment. The book continues with a comparison between traditional CICS programming, and CICS programming from Java. As a result, the main functional areas of the Java class library for CICS (JCICS) application programming interface (API) are extensively reviewed. Further chapters are provided to demonstrate interaction with structured data such as copybooks, and how to access relational databases by using Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) and Structured Query Language for Java (SQLJ). Finally, we devote a chapter to the migration of applications from the pooled JVM model to the new JVM server run time.

Mainframe computers play a central role in the daily operations of many of the world's largest corporations. Batch processing is still a fundamental, mission-critical component of the workloads that run on the mainframe. A large portion of the workload on IBM® z/OS® systems is processed in batch mode. This IBM Redbooks® publication is the fourth volume in a series of four. They address new technologies introduced by IBM to facilitate the use of hybrid batch applications that combine the best aspects of Java and procedural programming languages such as COBOL. This volume focuses on the latest enhancements in IBM IMSTM batch support. IMS has been available to clients for 45 years as IMS Transaction Manager, IMS Database Manager, or both. The audience for this book includes IT architects and application developers with a focus on batch processing on the z/OS platform.

Mainframe computers play a central role in the daily operations of many of the world's largest corporations, and batch processing is a fundamental part of the workloads that run on the mainframe. A large portion of the workload on IBM® z/OS® systems is processed in batch mode. Although several IBM Redbooks® publications discuss application modernization on the IBM z/OS platform, this book specifically addresses batch processing in detail. Many different technologies are available in a batch environment on z/OS systems. This book demonstrates these technologies and shows how the z/OS system offers a sophisticated environment for batch. In this practical book, we discuss a variety of themes that are of importance for batch workloads on z/OS systems and offer examples that you can try on your own system. The audience for this book includes IT architects and application developers, with a focus on batch processing on the z/OS platform.

IBM® CICS® is a mixed language application server that runs on IBM Z®. Over the 50 years since CICS was introduced in 1969, enterprises have used the qualities of service (QoSs) that CICS provides to allow them to create high throughput and secure transactional applications that have powered their business. As the IT landscape has evolved, so has CICS to allow these applications to integrate with new platforms and still provide value to the rest of the business. Because of this capability, many businesses still rely on CICS to power their core applications. This IBM Redpaper publication focuses on modernizing these CICS applications, allowing them to integrate with cloud-native applications. This modernization can be achieved either by constructing application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow new cloud-native applications to connect to your existing assets, rewriting parts of your application in newer languages and hosting them back on CICS, or by using CICS capabilities to extend your applications to provide new capabilities and functions. The paper takes a traditional example application and shows you how it works. Then, the paper extends the example, rewrites portions of its functions, and enables its APIs. It also explains how CICS applications can use continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) to deliver, test, and deploy code into CICS easily and with quality.
