This work deals with the design of a CMOS pixel sensor prototype (called MIMOSA 31) for the outer layers of the International Linear Collider (ILC) vertex detector. CMOS pixel sensors (CPS) also called monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) have demonstrated attractive performance towards the requirements of the vertex detector of the future linear collider. MIMOSA 31developed at IPHC-Strasbourg is the first pixel sensor integrated with 4-bit column-level ADC for the outer layers. It is composed of a matrix of 64 rows and 48 columns. The pixel concept combines in-pixel amplification with a correlated double sampling (CDS) operation in order to reduce the temporal and fixed pattern noise (FPN). At the bottom of the pixel array, each column is terminated with an analog to digital converter (ADC). The self-triggered ADC accommodating the pixel readout in a rolling shutter mode completes the conversion by performing a multi-bit/step approximation. The ADC design was optimized for power saving at sampling frequency. Accounting the fact that in the outer layers of the ILC vertex detector, the hit density is inthe order of a few per thousand, this ADC works in two modes: active mode and inactive mode. This thesis presents the details of the prototype chip and its laboratory test results.

In the vertex detector of the ILC (International Linear Collider), a large number of extra hits will be generated by electrons coming from the beam background. Momenta of these background electrons typically are lower than particles coming from physics events. Our group in IPHC has proposed the concept of a CMOS pixel sensor with on-chip ANNs to tag and remove hits generated by background particles.During my PhD thesis, I focused on the study of a CMOS pixel sensor with on-chip ANNs from the following aspects :1. The implementation of preprocessing modules and an ANN in an FPGA device for the feasibility study ;2. An on-chip algorithm for cluster search which is a part of preprocessing modules has been proposed to integrate into the ASIC design.

The thesis has been a priority as taking ownership of vertical integration technologies used in the industry to realize a multistage development, and to evaluate the contributions on CMOS pixel sensors (CPS). 3D integration technologies (3DIT) provide a way to mitigate this hampering correlation between speed and resolution, since they allow to staple layers of readout circuitry on top of the sensing layer, which results in a drastic increase of the functionalities located in (the shadow of) each pixel. A multi-layer structure allows for a higher spatial resolution because more and more transistors may be integrated vertically in a relatively small pixel. Moreover, bringing the components of the sensor closer to each other translates in a faster readout, owing to the reduction in the average length of the inner connecting wires. Vertical integration also opens up the possibility of combining different technologies best suited to each of the sensor main functionalities (signal sensing, analog and digital signal processing and transmission). It overcomes the limitations in this way from the foundry manufacturing parameters, which do not allow to fully exploit the potential ofCPS with a single CMOS technology. 3D-CPS are thus expected to overcome most of the limitations of standard 2DCPS, and are therefore suspected to over new perspectives for the innermost layer of the ILC vertex detector.

The ATLAS experiment will start operating at the High Luminosity LHC accelerator (HL-LHC) in 2026 to increase the probability of new discoveries. Depleted CMOS monolithic pixel detector technology has been one of the options considered for the outer layer of an upgraded ATLAS pixel detector and is a high potential technology for future pixel detectors. In this thesis, several prototypes have been developed using different depleted CMOS technologies, for instance, LFoundry (LF) 150 nm, TowerJazz (TJ) 180 nm and austriamicrosystems AG (AMS) 180 nm. In a high-energy environment like HL-LHC, Single Event Upsets (SEU), which become of concern for reliable circuit operation. Several test-chips in AMS, TowerJazz and LFoundry technologies with different SEU tolerant structures have been prototyped and tested. The SEU tolerant structures were designed with appropriate electronics simulations using Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools in order to study the sensitivity of injected charge to upset a memory state. An alternative powering scheme named Serial Powering scheme is foreseen for the future Inner Tracker (ITk) detector of the ATLAS experiment. To meet the requirements ofthe ATLAS experiment to the environment of a pixelated layer in a high radiation collider environment, new developments with depleted CMOS sensors have been made in Shunt-LDO regulator and sensor biasing which are designed in modified TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology. In the TowerJazz modified process, two different voltage levels are used for the purpose of sensor depletion. The bias voltages are generated by using a negative charge pump circuit.

Development Of Cmos Pixel Sensors For The Inner Tracking System Upgrade Of The Alice Experiment written by Tianyang Wang and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.
This work is part of the R&D program aimed for a CMOS pixel sensor (CPS) complying with the requirements of the upgrade of the inner tracking system (ITS) of the ALICE experiment. In order break the limitations of the state-of-the-art CPS, a 0.18 μm quadruple-well CMOS process was explored. Besides an enhanced radiation tolerance, with respect to the former sensors fabricated in a 0.35 μm process, the sensor based on this new process allows for full CMOS capability inside the pixel without degradation of the detection efficiency. Therefore, the signal discrimination, which was formerly performed at the column level, can be integrated inside the pixel. As a result, the readout speed and power consumption can be greatly improved as compared to the CPS with column-level discrimination. This work addresses the feasibility study of achieving the signal discrimination withina small pixel (i.e. 22 × 33 μm2), via the prototype named AROM-0. The pixel of AROM-0 contains a sensing diode, a pre-amplifier and an offset compensated discriminator. The noise performance of the various pixel versions implemented in AROM-0 was evaluated. The study was further pursued with the AROM-1 prototypes, incorporating the optimized pixel designs and the necessary on-chip intelligence to approach the final sensor we have proposed for the ALICE-ITS upgrade. This thesis presents in detail the design and the measurement results of these AROM sensors.

The Belle II experiment at KEK in Japan plans to upgrade the SuperKEKB accelerator by the end of the decade. This gives rise to the opportunity to upgrade the current vertex detector system to address the high background levels caused by the increased luminosity of the collider. One proposal for upgrading the vertex detector is to install a 5-layer all monolithic pixel vertex detector based on fully depleted CMOS DMAPS chips. The new system plans to use the OBELIX chips to improve background robustness and reduce occupancy levels through small and fast pixels. This causes better track findi...
