Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) engineers are responsible for the design, evaluation, and implementation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) solutions across the entire state. These installations occur with vast differences in requirements, expectations, and constraints. Many deployments require some type of communication system to complete the installation. This report details the development of a reference guidebook and training workshop for TxDOT engineers. The purpose of these materials is to: . establish a fundamental level of understanding of wire line communication concepts and technologies, . convey and explain a comprehensive process for assessing communication needs for ITS deployments, and . create a set of workshop materials for future training program opportunities.

Intelligent Freeway Transportation Systems: Functional Design focuses on the efficient use of resources in the design of ITS. It discusses the principles of top down design starting with objectives and requirements, and provides guidance for the development and evaluation of functional design alternatives according to cost effectiveness principles. It shows how transportation planning principles such as Wardrop’s Laws and traffic diversion principles relate to functional ITS device selections and equipment locations. Methodologies for translating objectives to functional device types are provided. Application factors to identify device deployment densities (e.g. number of detectors per mile) as a function of traffic conditions are provided, as are evaluation models for evaluating the benefits of design alternatives based on traffic conditions. Design guidance and benefits evaluation include the following functions: (1) Non-recurrent congestion – Improvement of incident clearance time, (2) Non recurrent congestion – Incident information to motorists, (3) Recurrent congestion – Information to motorists, (4) Ramp metering, (5) Motorist service patrols.

This new edition continues to focus on the nuts and bolts of wireless network access for devices on board vehicles. It has been updated to reflect on the most recent trends in the broad domain of Intelligent Transport Systems. It covers 802.11ac – a recent standard that is very useful in context where a large amount of information is to be sent in a limited time window. The new edition includes a thorough revision of the 'Vehicular Communication: Issues and Standards' chapter, with new citations and a new subsection on security. The new edition also cites numerous fresh research works to give readers an updated overview of the field. An update on the time delay incurred by applications that always run in the background (Skype, etc) is also covered. The 'Future Directions and Research Ideas' chapter is also largely re-written. An entirely new chapter on D2D communication keeping in view the vehicular context has been added in this edition. This volume will be a useful addition to the libraries for both the students of wireless communication and those studying applied probability.

A number of wireless technologies have been developed in recent years to meet the increasing needs of high-speed wireless communications in civil and military applications. The advances include WiFi (IEEE 802.11), WiMAX (IEEE 802.16), sensor networks, wireless Mesh/Ad hoc networks, mobile IP, smart antenna, cognitive radio, and so on. These emerging technologies will significantly impact the design and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems, which aims to effectively provide higher vehicles safety, traffic management, and communications among vehicles and transport infrastructure. Organised into three parts, 'Wireless Technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems' provides readers a thorough technical guide covering various wireless technologies developed in the most recent years for Intelligent Transportation Systems applications. It presents key technologies of circuits and physical layer, network protocols, system designs and applications. The broad content covers topics of radar sensor, radio channel modelling, smart antenna, medium access control, routing protocol, data dissemination, hand-over, security, mesh networking, road traffic estimation and monitoring, and location-based services. This comprehensive book is a collection of basic concepts, major issues, design approaches, application examples, and future research directions of various advanced technologies developed for Intelligent Transportation Systems. With its broad coverage allowing cross reference, it serves as an essential reference for engineers, researchers, students, scientists, professors, designers and planners of Intelligent Transportation Systems.
