Three dimensional integration schemes for VLSI have the potential for enabling the development of new high-performance architectures for applications such as focal plane sensors. Due to the high costs involved in 3-D VLSI fabrication and the fabrication complexity of 3-D integration, analysis of the design and process tradeoffs for a particular application is essential. An architectural and topological design tool is presented that enables the high-level analysis and optimization of sensor architectures targeted to a variety of 3-D VLSI process options. This design tool is based on an inference chain evaluation framework, and allows for a high-level structural representation of a circuit architecture to be considered in conjunction with low-level process models. Approximation strategies for projecting circuit area and performance are incorporated into the inference chain relations.

Paralleling with development of computer technology, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) has been researched and introduced into industry since the 1960s. Until the mid-1980s, CAD means Computer-Aided Drafting in architectural field because the majority of practicing architects originally used computer as an electronic drafting tool to produce construction drawings. However, now computer 3D visualization technology as a design aided tool is impacting the architectural design process. In this research, a review of architectural representation in the early design phases is given. Additionally, a literature review of CAD development is presented as well. As a focus of this research, computer 3D visualization technology has been researched as a design aid. The emerging use of computer 3D visualization technology in some educational settings is also reviewed. Within this research, three Case Studies are presented to provide insights of how computer 3D visualization technology may impact architectural design process, design service quality, and client-architect's relationship.

3D visualization in the field of architecture is an emerging discipline that has had a powerful impact on how architects present their work, especially with the use of the technology's ability to communicate ideas. However, the potential for what 3D software can do is still being realized in the architectural design process. Although a plethora of ways to communicate exists, certain possibilities in the virtual realm are not being capitalized on. Spatial awareness in digital architecture, especially of real world representation, is not being utilized to its fullest potential, just as client involvement and interaction in the virtual space is limited to static presentations. This project proposes an alternative approach to the current design process by presenting a system that will develop a stronger relationship between the client and the architectural designer. By drawing from aspects in other fields of 3D design, specifically video-games, the project lays the framework for a system to be used by architects to immerse their clients in a proposed architecture and encourages interaction from them within the virtual environment. The project uses programs such as 3Ds Max, Photoshop, and Flash, to develop content for an environment realized in the Unreal Engine using the Unreal Development Kit (UDK). The UDK environment demonstrates the system described in my thesis research. This system incorporates the client participation and experience in an imagined space to create a knowledgeable understanding of the architect's vision, thus developing a deeper understanding between parties' wants, needs, and approaches.
