Still considered essential reading for serious thinkers on religion more than a century and a half after it was written, this seminal work of modern theology, first published in 1845, presents a history of Catholic doctrine from the days of the Apostles to the time of its writing, and follows with specific examples of how the doctrine has not only survived corruption but grown stronger through defending itself against it, and is, therefore, the true religion. This classic of Christian apologetics, considered a foundational work of 19th-century intellectualism on par with Darwin's Origin of Species, is must reading not only for the faithful but also for anyone who wishes to be well educated in the fundamentals of modern thought.

The problem of change has assumed great prominence in much of the current ferment in theology, and many of the issues in question can best be interpreted as relating to the validity and limits of doctrinal development. The questions cannot be faced constructively, however, until the development of doctrine has been clearly charted, a historical as well as a theological assignment. In this unique introductory survey—more modest in scope but more scholarly in method than Cardinal Newman’s great programmatic essay of 1845—Mr. Pelikan presents three case histories of the particular doctrines that have crucial points of division among Christians. His cogent analyses of Cyprian on Original Sin, Athanasius on the Virgin Mary, and Hilary on the Holy Spirit demonstrate the interaction between the sacramental life of the Church and the intellectual work of the theologian that consistently marked the development of doctrine by the early Fathers. Thus they clarify some central aspects of the continuing theological and ecumenical debates. Mr. Pelikan, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, is the author of many books and articles, including a forthcoming full-scale history of the development of doctrine.

John Henry Newman's treatise on Christian belief stands as one of the finest original works of church history in the nineteenth century. A prolific author, educator and priest, John Henry Newman sought to catalog, examine and improve knowledge and understanding of church doctrine. In this book, he delves deep into the past of the Catholic church and other traditions of Christianity, in order to accurately trace the development of various doctrines. By the nineteenth century, it was no secret that many of the Christian doctrines had been warped or adulterated by corruptions. Often these divergences would appear several centuries after a given doctrine first originated; part of Newman's quest was to determine which doctrines had undergone such corruption, and which had remained untouched over the ages. Newman is certain to differentiate between the early church and Gnostic traditions, the Catholic church, and the various Protestant and other Christian denominations. Throughout the text, he keenly notes how different groups reinterpreted or simply added to the canon. Knowing this, Newman attempts to distinguish spirited developments of Christian doctrine from flagrant corruptions of the ancient, early principles of the church. Owing to the resources at his command, and his tireless and resolute determination, John Henry Newman made substantial headway in a topic which many historians and theologians had written off as too obscure or simply impenetrable. The result of Newman's years of investigation and study are largely contained within this single, lengthy essay. Inevitably, the work proved controversial as scholars disagreed with or otherwise scorned Newman's conclusions. However, over the many years since its initial publication, both ordinary and scholarly Christians have judged this work to be of enormous merit and significance, noting its marked and genuine thirst for truth and insight. An Essay On Development Of Christian Doctrine is an important historical text which has been innumerably cited since its first publication in 1845. Revised and updated multiple times during and after John Henry Newman's life, it is with great pleasure that the publisher presents this printing, which is based upon the 14th impression of 1909.

John Henry Newman And The Development Of Doctrine written by Stephen Morgan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-27 with Religion categories.

John Henry Newman and the Development of Doctrine provides an analysis of the attempts by John Henry Newman to account for the historical reality of doctrinal change within Christianity in the light of his lasting conviction that the idea of Christianity is fixed by reference to the dogmatic content of the deposit of faith. It argues that Newman proposed a series of hypotheses to account for the apparent contradiction between change and continuity, that this series begins much earlier than is generally recognized and that the final hypothesis he was to propose, contained in An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, provides a methodology of lasting theological value and contemporary relevance. Stephen Morgan establishes the centrality of the problem of change and continuity in theology, to Newman's theological work as an Anglican, its part in his conversion to Catholicism and its contemporary relevance to Catholic theology. It also surveys the major secondary literature relating to the question, with particular reference to those works published within the last fifty years. Additionally, Morgan considers the legacy of the Essay as a tool in Newman's theology and in the work of later theologians, finally suggesting that it may offer a useful methodological contribution to the contemporary Catholic debate about hermeneutical approaches to the Second Vatican Council and post-conciliar developments in doctrine.
