From the study carried out in the Langkawi Island, it was found that there were two types of Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia Jack.), i.e. male and female. Both types could be diferrentiated through the leaf shape and the development of the flowers. However, the leaf shapes are difficult to differentiate and can only be done by experts. The flowers of both types pistils and stamens but the male tree did not produce any seeds. Seeds from the female tree could produce both male and female seedlings but the number of male seedling was small.

The inability of male Tongkat Ali flowers to produce seeds, and the ability of female Tongkat Ali flowers to produce fruits, seeds and seedlings are well known among those involved in the cultivation of traditional medicinal plants, especially for those living in the region of Pulau Langkawi. In general, the difference between male and female species of Tongkat Ali were based on the diffferences in the vegetative form of each species and the ability or inability to produce seeds.

The differences between male and female species can be observed while the plant is in its seedling stage. Morphological differences between male and female Tongkat Ali wwere examined. Plant selected for study consist of : 1) adult plants around 30 years old; 2) seedlings between 2-3 years old and originating from a single plant;3) seedlings approximately 1 year old and originating from a single plant; 4) leaves and stems of the two aforementioned types. Aside from casual observation with the naked eye, magnifications of up to 6, 12, 25 and 50 times were used. [Authors' abstract].
