Traditional frames of reference from medical, educational, and developmental models are presented to create a functional approach to the assessment and management of the motor components of vision. The wire coil bound edition of 210 pages contains 134 photographs and illustrations which help to clarify normal and atypical development of vision, and suggest ways to integrate intervention programs into home, school, and community activities.

This book describes transdisciplinary management of multiply disabled children with vision problems and presents four theoretical models of visual assessment and three illustrative case studies in a sequence appropriate to the learning process. The first three models are intended to lead to assessment and management of the child and the last to assessment and management of the child's environment. The models are: (1) medical (anatomy, physiology, pathology of the optical and neural visual system); (2) educational (visual perception and learning); (3) developmental (reflexive and voluntary eye movements, relationship between visual and motor processes); and (4) functional (visual components of daily living, assessment of the environment). After an introductory section, Part One presents the theoretical rationale in a discussion of each of the four models as applied to the cases. Part Two describes developmental vision assessment including evolution of the Erhardt Developmental Vision Assessment instrument and models for assessment. Part Three first offers a model for management of visual-motor dysfunction and then applies the principles of assessment to management of each of the three cases. The final chapter offers a summary including a synthesis of models for visual-motor assessment and management. A glossary defines technical terms. References are included with each chapter. (DB)

Clinics in Developmental Medicine No.186 The increased awareness of cerebral visual impairment in children, combined with improved recognition of its wide ranging manifestations, has led to its recognition as the most common cause of visual impairment in children in the developed world. Yet the subject is in its infancy, with very little published to date. Information on this complex topic has been needed by all disciplines working with disabled children for many years. This ambitious book links the work of authors from many of the major research teams in this field, who have made significant contributions to the literature on the subject of cerebral visual impairment and provide a structured amalgam of the viewpoints of different specialists. The book contains some very novel concepts, which will be of great practical value to those who care for children with visual impairment due to brain injury. Summaries of the more specialist chapters as well as clear diagrams and a glossary have been provided to increase the book’s accessibility to a broader readership. This is an exciting and important field, to which this book makes a major contribution.

A comprehensive review of visual impairment in children and possible solutions The rising number of cases in visual disorders during development, over the last decade, has strongly influenced approaches to diagnosis and rehabilitation. Moreover, the study of visual function has evolved not only within an ophthalmological, but also a neurodevelopmental framework: advances in our understanding of the maturation and plasticity of visual system functioning have further guided the progress of such approaches. As a result, the key importance of the developmental age is now widely acknowledged, from as early as the first months of life. This book provides an overview of the diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders in relation to advances in neurodevelopmental studies. The concept of early and multimodal management is discussed, with a focus on neuro-psycho-ophthalmological issues. The need for training courses aimed at updating semiological aspects and methodological and rehabilitative strategies is established, as being of significant value to clinical practice. 4 parts: General overviewCerebral visual impairments: from diagnosis to rehabilitationRehabilitation of visual impairmentsVisual disorders and neurological diseases

Cerebral visual disorders have far-reaching consequences for child development. These have profound adverse effects on children’s education and success in school and also in later life, but, unfortunately, cerebral visual disorders often remain undiagnosed and untreated in the pediatric population. This book provides a state-of-the-art account of what is known about the development and disorders of visual perception in children. It covers the development and disorders of visual perception in children, their assessment, early intervention and management in an interdisciplinary context, both from a scientific as well as clinical perspective. Case studies illustrate the recommended assessment and rehabilitation procedures; synopses, boxes and check-lists complement the presentation of our recommendations for clinical practice.

Management of visual impairment in childhood requires input from such a wide range of medical and nonmedical disciplines that the delivery of coordinated and appropriate care presents serious problems. This book is a practical guide to the day-to-day management of children with this difficult problem. Written in accessible language with a minimum of jargon, it is intended for both a medical and nonmedical audience: pediatricians, ophthalmologists, optometrists, educators, and social workers. The authors cover a wide range of topics, including the epidemiology of childhood blindness, prevention, visual assessment in early life, the ophthalmic and neurological causes of visual impairment, the effects of impairment on development, behavior, and the family, community and ophthalmic management, management of the multiply-impaired child, access to the educational curriculum, and the challenge of technology.
