Agatha Sloane’s debut book, The Devil Disguised as a Jesus Loving Lesbian, tells her story through the character of Chole. In a series of confessional letters to her beloved friend, Addie, she reveals an intense battle between the world she was born into and the world she wants to live in. Like most of us, all she wants is to be happy, loved, and to feel a sense of belonging. Unfortunately, the realities of illness, financial deficit, oppression, and addiction squashed her innocent dreams before the age of ten, leaving her to question the truth about everything—especially love. She abandoned religious piety and desperately sought to discover who Jesus is and what it means for him to be the Son of God. Each letter exposes a deeper depth of struggle, uncovering the vulnerable and innate desires that inspired her to wander the turbulent paths masked as acceptance, justice, and love. Join the author as she examines how people are tempted to walk with the devil as they seek to be the gods of their own lives—and how we can find what is truth.

In recent decades, there has been a growing recognition of the significance of the supernatural in a Victorian context. Studies of nineteenth-century spiritualism, occultism, magic, and folklore have highlighted that Victorian England was ridden with spectres and learned magicians. Despite this growing body of scholarship, little historiographical work has addressed the Devil. This book demonstrates the significance of the Devil in a Victorian context, emphasising his pervasiveness and diversity. Drawing on a rich array of primary material, including theological and folkloric works, fiction, newspapers and periodicals, and broadsides and other ephemera, it uses the diabolic to explore the Victorians' complex and ambivalent relationship with the supernatural. Both the Devil and hell were theologically contested during the nineteenth century, with an increasing number of both clergymen and laypeople being discomfited by the thought of eternal hellfire. Nevertheless, the Devil continued to play a role in the majority of English denominations, as well as in folklore, spiritualism, occultism, popular culture, literature, and theatre. The Devil and the Victorians will appeal to readers interested in nineteenth-century English cultural and religious history, as well as the darker side of the supernatural.

In The Devil Disguised as St. Elmo we follow Pierre Taillandier, a Jesuit priest and an astronomer, to the New World and on to the East Indies to serve as a missionary. His epic journey began in 1707 in Lyon, France, and ended in Pondicherry, India, two and a half years later. He crossed the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the South China Sea, and the Bay of Bengal to get there. On his arrival he penned a letter recounting adventures, challenges, joys, and perils along the way. Taillandier began his letter by telling his correspondent in Paris that: After God, I owe Your Reverend the happiness that I enjoy dedicating my remaining days to the conversion of Infidels... His words are an engaging and detailed chronicle, and they challenge us as they represent a poignant intersection between one man's life and the events that shaped his destiny.
