In the tradition of the old "Ace Doubles" two-in-one books (flip one over to read the second title)--here is the fourth Wildside Mystery Double: DEVIL'S PLAGUE: A Mystery Novel, by Michael R. Collings. The scene lay tranquil and peaceful--except for the young woman's body, battered and broken at the foot of Porcupine Falls. Who was responsible? Was it the local boy, enamored and fearful of rejection; the stranger with the hidden past; or a serial killer? It's up to Lynn Hansen, recently arrived from L.A., and her new friend, Victoria Sears, to explore the intimacies of death, and solve the mystery of the Devil's Plague! DRIVING HELL'S HIGHWAY: A Crime Novel, by Gary Lovisi. He had no past and no future, only the long open road ahead of him. What would he find there, other than danger and violence? Sometimes a shred of memory, dark and fearful, gave him a hint of what he'd once been. Now he was just a loner. Darkness shrouded his heart and mind. With a trunkful of guns and a tankful of gas, he was Driving Hell's Highway! Hard-boiled crime in the 1950s paperback tradition.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), course: Cinema and Society, Kino und Gesellschaft, language: English, abstract: 1 Introduction In adapting Stoker’s Dracula, Murnau has made quite a few changes to the original plot. Some of them were made due to economic and practical reasons, such as moving the setting and locations to Germany, some of them in order to avoid charges of copyright infringement, such as changing the characters’ names, as Murnau was not authorised to make an adaptation. However, Murnau doesn’t simply copy Dracula. Stoker’s novel about the intrusion of an alien evil into English society is transformed into a story mirroring the fears that prevailed in Germany in the late 1910’s. Screenwriter Henrik Galeen and di¬rector Murnau were obviously influenced by the impressions that both World War I and the influenza pandemic had left. The war had left large areas in Central Europe in ruins and had triggered many political changes. Often, the new-founded Weimar Republic was seen as weak and incapable of acting. Moreover, the outbreak of the Spanish Flu in 1918 proved no less devastating, ranking “with the plague of Justinian and the Black Death as one of the three most destructive human epidemics.”(1) Assisted by large troop movements and disastrous hygienic con¬ditions after the armistice, the disease spread across the globe within less than three months. Physicians and scientist were helpless. There was no immunization available: the influenza virus could not be isolated and positively identified as the pathogene until 1932. In fact, even today there are no means of preventing another influenza epidemic(2) . Murnau begins with a caption that presents the movie as a record of an epidemic: “Aufzeichnung über das große Sterben in Wisborg.” The vampire is not the party animal that Lugosi impersonated; instead, Murnau draws on a tradition that associates vampires with unexpected or inexplicable death. His creature feeds on a society which is defenseless against him, either because its members are too weakened or too terrified to take action. Thus, though set almost one hundred years in the past, Nosferatu presents an actualisation of Dracula. [...] ______ (1) Potter, C.W. “A history of influenza”. “Sara Douglass has the breadth of vision necessary to create sweeping epics and the storyteller’s gift that makes readers love her.” —Locus Sara Douglass has already established herself as one of the most original and exciting of today’s bestselling fantasists with her Wayfarer Redemption Trilogy, DarkGlass Mountain Trilogy, and other magnificent works of epic fantasy. With The Devil’s Diadem, she delivers a richly imaginative stand-alone novel of alternate history, set in a twelfth-century England similar to our own time, in which a virulent plague threatens to annihilate a kingdom—and one unwitting young noblewoman holds the key to salvation. Library Journal puts Douglass’s work, “on a par with with Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan.” Read The Devil’s Diadem and you will most certainly agree.

The thing that wiped out the dinosaurs is about to make its comeback. It's a trillion times smaller than a killer asteroid. And it's fallen into the hands of a madman. After surviving a horrific outbreak of the Black Nile virus, epidemiologist Leigh Austen's done her best to bury memories along with the bodies. But when a call for help from the World Health Organization (WHO) arrives at her lab, she's got to face her nightmares all over again. Something's wiping entire villages clean of humans and wildlife in a war-torn former Soviet Republic. Leigh's skills are desperately needed to identify and stop the pathogen's spread before it explodes into a global pandemic.Austen's team of scientists and armed security set off into the epicenter of the hot zone: over a mile straight down the throat of the Karakul, the deepest open-pit mine in Asia. From there, they'll contend with treacherous military officers, caverns filled with scalding-hot poisonous gas, and an organism so deadly it annihilated the dinosaurs sixty-five million years ago. What Leigh and her people discover will shake them to their very core.If they survive.Author's Note: The Devil's Noose: A Pandemic Medical Thriller is a self-contained work and does not end on a cliffhanger. It contains a limited amount of strong language, gore, and some graphic violence. Ratings-wise, it would either be a hard PG-13 or soft R. Please decide to purchase accordingly.
