A historical novel based on a true story of the Jacobite rebellion, from “a writer who has a special feeling for the dramatic” (Chicago Tribune). This fiercely beautiful novel tells the true story of Charles Radcliffe, a Catholic nobleman who joined the short-lived Jacobite rebellion of 1715, and of Jenny, his daughter by a secret marriage. Set in the Northumbrian wilds, teeming London, and colonial Virginia—where Jenny eventually settled on the estate of the famous William Byrd of Westover—Jenny’s story reveals one young woman’s loyalty, passion, and courage as she struggles in a life divided between the Old World and the New. “Miss Seton’s narrative is richly buttressed with the results of scrupulous research on the personages and the period. Her sole purpose is to tell a rousing good tale plainly and simply and this she does admirably.” —New York Herald Tribune

"Compulsively readable."—New York Times Book Review From Stuart Turton, author of The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, comes an extraordinary new locked-room murder mystery. A murder on the high seas. A remarkable detective duo. A demon who may or may not exist. It's 1634, and Samuel Pipps, the world's greatest detective, is being transported to Amsterdam to be executed for a crime he may, or may not, have committed. Traveling with him is his loyal bodyguard, Arent Hayes, who is determined to prove his friend innocent. Among the other guests is Sara Wessel, a noblewoman with a secret. But no sooner is their ship out to sea than devilry begins to blight the voyage. A strange symbol appears on the sail. A dead leper stalks the decks. Livestock dies in the night. And then the passengers hear a terrible voice, whispering to them in the darkness, promising three unholy miracles, followed by a slaughter. First an impossible pursuit. Second an impossible theft. And third an impossible murder. Could a demon be responsible for their misfortunes? With Pipps imprisoned, only Arent and Sara can solve a mystery that stretches back into their past and now threatens to sink the ship, killing everybody on board. Shirley Jackson meets Sherlock Holmes in this chilling thriller of supernatural horror, occult suspicion, and paranormal mystery on the high seas.

The Devil In The Holy Water Or The Art Of Slander From Louis Xiv To Napoleon written by Robert Darnton and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-27 with History categories.

Slander has always been a nasty business, Robert Darnton notes, but that is no reason to consider it a topic unworthy of inquiry. By destroying reputations, it has often helped to delegitimize regimes and bring down governments. Nowhere has this been more the case than in eighteenth-century France, when a ragtag group of literary libelers flooded the market with works that purported to expose the wicked behavior of the great. Salacious or seditious, outrageous or hilarious, their books and pamphlets claimed to reveal the secret doings of kings and their mistresses, the lewd and extravagant activities of an unpopular foreign-born queen, and the affairs of aristocrats and men-about-town as they consorted with servants, monks, and dancing masters. These libels often mixed scandal with detailed accounts of contemporary history and current politics. And though they are now largely forgotten, many sold as well as or better than some of the most famous works of the Enlightenment. In The Devil in the Holy Water, Darnton—winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for his Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France and author of his own best-sellers, The Great Cat Massacre and George Washington's False Teeth—offers a startling new perspective on the origins of the French Revolution and the development of a revolutionary political culture in the years after 1789. He opens with an account of the colony of French refugees in London who churned out slanderous attacks on public figures in Versailles and of the secret agents sent over from Paris to squelch them. The libelers were not above extorting money for pretending to destroy the print runs of books they had duped the government agents into believing existed; the agents were not above recognizing the lucrative nature of such activities—and changing sides. As the Revolution gave way to the Terror, Darnton demonstrates, the substance of libels changed while the form remained much the same. With the wit and erudition that has made him one of the world's most eminent historians of eighteenth-century France, he here weaves a tale so full of intrigue that it may seem too extravagant to be true, although all its details can be confirmed in the archives of the French police and diplomatic service. Part detective story, part revolutionary history, The Devil in the Holy Water has much to tell us about the nature of authorship and the book trade, about Grub Street journalism and the shaping of public opinion, and about the important work that scurrilous words have done in many times and places.

The horror-stricken passengers screamed loudly. The pilot managed to contact the American Airlines Office and inform them about the strange occurrences. The news of the plane going out of control caused a general panic among the officials in the terminal. Suddenly, the line of communication between the terminal and the aircraft cut off. Nixon screamed when he beheld that incredible sight. "My God, What is it?" the other passengers followed his gaze and saw the gigantic hear and long neck of a monstrous creature that was approaching the plane. They were horrified to death. There were plenty of horns The plane stood still in the air as if it was feathered to an unseen nail. The roof of the plane melted in the powerful rays which originated from the horns of the monster. The passengers screamed, seeing the cave sized mouth of the devilish creature aiming at them. The next moment, the monster caught some of the passengers in its mouth and swallowed them. One of the passengers gathered his guts and started firing at it. The effect was totally unanticipated. All the bullets from the revolver got caught in the fatal light rays and vanished into thin air. A middle aged man jumped out of the plane in fright. Suddenly the monster extended one of its horns and caught him. It roared horrible. The aircraft, its passengers and the sky itself shook, hearing the blood chilling roar of the monster. The plane moved in a circle as if it was caught in a whirlpool. The monster caught the panic stricken middle aged man in its mouth. The other passengers screamed in horror, hearing his bones being crunched and ground. Will any of them escape from that devilish monster? Who will save them? Will anyone succeed in killing the scary creature?
