Excerpt from Devon Cornwall Notes Queries, Vol. 11: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Local History Biography and Antiquities of the Counties of Devon and Cornwall; From January 1920 to October 1921 Editorial Note. - We desire to place on record our appreciation of the work done by Mr. Maxwell Adams and Mr. Tapley Soper as our co-editors, from 1908. We have received from them at all times the greatest assistance, and we are sure the readers of the Devon and Cornwall Notes and Queries realise what splendid work they have done, which has resulted in making it such a useful publication and one which compares most favourably with similar publications in other counties. John S. Amery. Edward Windeatt. I. Norman Corbels at Plympton. - A few years ago, when an old cottage at Plympton was being demolished, three Norman corbels were found, built into the wall. They were protected by being placed face inwards in the wall, so they are in very good condition. They must originally have been supporters of a corbel table. This was an arrangement to protect the walls from rain drippings. Two or three courses of stone at the top of the wall, under the eaves, were made to project, one above the other, beyond the surface of the wall; it was then easy enough to carry the roof further out, so that all drippings would fall clear of the wall. Naturally the lower course of projecting blocks required support, and this was afforded, sometimes by a row of arches, sometimes by corbels; and sometimes, as at Romsey Abbey, by both, the corbels being below the arches. Usually, but not always, the corbel is placed beneath each joint of the base-course of the table. At first Norman corbel tables were supported by square blocks; later corbels were nearly always in the form of heads. These diverse essays investigate political factors behind the rapid development of cartography in Renaissance Europe and its impact on emerging European nations. By 1500 a few rulers had already discovered that better knowledge of their lands would strengthen their control over them; by 1550, the cartographer's art had become an important instrument for bringing territories under the control of centralized government. Throughout the following century increasing governmental reliance on maps demanded greater accuracy and more sophisticated techniques. This volume, a detailed survey of the political uses of cartography between 1400 and 1700 in Europe, answers these questions: When did monarchs and ministers begin to perceive that maps could be useful in government? For what purposes were maps commissioned? How accurate and useful were they? How did cartographic knowledge strengthen the hand of government? By focusing on particular places and periods in early modern Europe, the chapters offer new insights into the growth of cartography as a science, the impetus behind these developments - often rulers attempting to expand their power - and the role of mapmaking in European history. The essay on Poland reveals that cartographic progress came only under the impetus of powerful rulers; another explores the French monarchy's role in the burst of scientific cartography that marked the opening of the "splendid century". Additional chapters discuss the profound influence of cartographic ideas on the English aristocracy during the sixteenth century, the relation of progress in mapmaking to imperialistic goals of the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs, and the supposed primacy of Italian mapmakingfollowing the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Peter Barber, David Buisseret, John Marino, Michael J. Mikos, Geoffrey Parker, and James Vann. These essays were originally presented as the Kenneth Nebenzahl, Jr., Lectures in the History of Cartography at the Newberry Library.

St Paul's Cathedral stood at the centre of religious life in medieval London. It was the mother church of the diocese, a principal landowner in the capital and surrounding countryside, and a theatre for the enactment of events of national importance. The cathedral was also a powerhouse of commemoration and intercession, where prayers and requiem masses were offered on a massive scale for the salvation of the living and the dead. This spiritual role of St Paul's Cathedral was carried out essentially by the numerous chantry priests working and living in its precinct. Chantries were pious foundations, through which donors, clerks or lay, male or female, endowed priests to celebrate intercessory masses for the benefit of their souls. At St Paul's Cathedral, they were first established in the late twelfth century and, until they were dissolved in 1548, they contributed greatly to the daily life of the cathedral. They enhanced the liturgical services offered by the cathedral, increased the number of the clerical members associated with it, and intensified relations between the cathedral and the city of London. Using the large body of material from the cathedral archives, this book investigates the chantries and their impacts on the life, services and clerical community of the cathedral, from their foundation in the early thirteenth century to the dissolution. It demonstrates the flexibility and adaptability of these pious foundations and the various contributions they made to medieval society; and sheds light on the men who played a role which, until the abolition of the chantries in 1548, was seen to be crucial to the spiritual well-being of medieval London.
