A diáspora venezuelana trata-se de um fenômeno engendrado pela conjugação de mudanças na conjuntura internacional e por uma dupla crise interna de natureza política e econômica que se estruturou ao longo da década de 2010, tendo como repercussão um rápido êxodo internacional de mais de 10% da população até o ano de 2020, quando as fronteiras internacionais se fecharam em função da difusão multilateral da pandemia da Covid-19 no globo. O deslocamento venezuelano para o exterior seguiu dois padrões de concentração espacial quanto aos destinos, tanto de natureza Norte-Sul, com um menor volume de fluxos, quanto Sul-Sul, com forte densificação dos fluxos de imigrantes e refugiados. Esta dispersão aconteceu em função dos venezuelanos com maior renda se direcionarem por meio aéreo para a América do Norte (padrão Norte Sul) em contraposição ao deslocamento terrestre dos venezuelanos com menor renda para países vizinhos na América do Sul (padrão Sul-Sul). Não é por acaso que o Brasil, por meio do estado de Roraima como fronteira imediata em relação à Venezuela, se tornou no quinto maior epicentro de destino dos fluxos de imigrantes e refugiados, o que requereu uma resposta por parte do Governo Federal, a Operação Acolhida, para lidar com os complexos dilemas que emergiram no eixo terrestre dos deslocamentos, desde o município roraimense de Pacaraima (linha de fronteira), passando pela capital do estado, Boa Vista (faixa de fronteira), até se chegar à capital do estado do Amazonas, Manaus (maior centro econômico da Amazônia). A justificativa para o desenvolvimento do presente livro fundamenta-se não apenas na relevância para se estudar este fenômeno de significativa escala empírica, mas também para se preencher uma lacuna científica, oportunizado assim discussões e novos conhecimentos sobre o sistema de governança da Operação Acolhida, os quais vão além das tradicionais análises dos impactos da imigração em Roraima, o menor estado da federação, com apenas 600 mil habitantes. Uma vez que os deslocamentos imigratórios venezuelanos em direção à Roraima geraram transformações radicais na paisagem sociocultural do estado, em especial dos municípios de Pacaraima e Boa Vista, um forte fluxo de capital humano de novos atores (OIs, ONGs e movimentos religiosos), também surgiu em resposta à Operação Acolhida e aos fluxos de capital que foram direcionados principalmente pelo Governo Federal. No contexto institucional de uma “Indústria da Migração” lubrificada por recusos financeiros internacionais e do governo federal (Operação Acolhida), foi consolidado em Roraima um campo de poder permeado por dinâmicas de cooperação e conflito entre militares, OIs e ONGS, no qual as entidades religiosas possuem participação fundamental na prestação de serviços humanitários, mas que é desconhecido ou mesmo recebe pouca voz pela opinião pública. Partindo de uma agenda de estudo focalizada no sistema de governança da Operação Acolhida, estruturado de modo tripartite pelo Governo Federal, Organizações Internacionais (OIs), e Organizações da Sociedade Civil, o presente livro apresenta como problema de estudo o seguinte questionamento relacionado ao último ator deste tripé: Qual o papel das Igrejas e organizações religiosas na prestação dos serviços humanitários para a comunidade de imigrantes e refugiados venezuelanos em Roraima? Em um contexto de relativo silêncio administrativo por parte das políticas públicas e da falta de escala da Operação Acolhida para prestar serviços à comunidade de imigrantes e refugiados venezuelanos em Roraima, a pesquisa manifestada no presente livro teve como hipótese de trabalho que as organizações e movimentos religiosos se destacam juntamente com outras Organizações não Governamentais (ONGs) em razão da proatividade na busca de soluções nas agendas de segurança alimentar, sanitária e laboral, preenchendo lacunas de serviços humanitários. A pesquisa procura realizar uma leitura bottom-up, fundamentada no papel da Sociedade Civil organizada sobre a crise imigratória venezuelana em direção a Roraima, de modo a dar voz às entidades e movimentos religiosos que são subestimados em relação ao papel decisivo e com forte capilaridade na prestação de serviços humanitários junto à comunidade de imigrantes e refugiados venezuelanos. O recorte teórico-conceitual da pesquisa é apresentado dentro de uma abordagem multidisciplinar e de um paradigma eclético, os quais são complementarmente funcionais para explorar a complexidade do fenômeno da diáspora venezuelana em Roraima e o significativo papel que as instituições religiosas cristãs possuem na prestação de serviços, tal como acontece em outras experiências de crises humanitárias, embora muito pouco conhecida e discutida na realidade brasileira O recorte metodológico da pesquisa se caracteriza pelo uso de uma abordagem exploratória-explicativa-descritiva quanto aos fins e quali-quantitativa quanto aos meios, sendo o método dedutivo o fio condutor de estruturação das análises e discussões, por meio de uma triangulação metodológica dos procedimentos de levantamento de dados (revisão bibliográfica, documental e integrativa) e de análise dados (estudo de caso com base em hermenêutica social, bem como análise gráfica e iconográfica que levaram em consideração uma hemeroteca temática do Jornal Folha de Boa Vista). O roteiro de desenvolvimento do livro apresenta uma pesquisa com design clássico à medida em que há uma lógica argumentativa que é apresentada em três capítulos, incluídas as seções de introdução e conclusão, que abordam respectivamente os marcos de abstração (capítulo 1, com o recorte teórico, e, capítulo 2, com o roteiro metodológico da pesquisa) vis-à-vis aos marcos empíricos do estudo de caso (capítulo 3, com a análise e os resultados). Com base nas discussões e resultados obtidos nesta obra, uma rica análise sobre o boom migratório venezuelano para Roraima e sobre o papel das Igrejas e organizações religiosas na prestação de serviços humanitários é fornecida a um amplo número de leitores, fundamentada por uma análise multidisciplinar que combina o rigor teórico-metodológico com uma didática abordagem e uma acessível linguagem, preenchendo assim uma lacuna para o potencial público leitor, seja de acadêmicos e profissionais da área, seja de cidadãos interessados por novas informações e conhecimentos.

Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the nineteenth century had the largest population of urban slaves in the Americas—primary contributors to the atmosphere and vitality of the city. On the little-known and darker side of shamanism there exists an ancient form of sorcery called kanaimà, a practice still observed among the Amerindians of the highlands of Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil that involves the ritual stalking, mutilation, lingering death, and consumption of human victims. At once a memoir of cultural encounter and an ethnographic and historical investigation, this book offers a sustained, intimate look at kanaimà, its practitioners, their victims, and the reasons they give for their actions. Neil L. Whitehead tells of his own involvement with kanaimà—including an attempt to kill him with poison—and relates the personal testimonies of kanaimà shamans, their potential victims, and the victims’ families. He then goes on to discuss the historical emergence of kanaimà, describing how, in the face of successive modern colonizing forces—missionaries, rubber gatherers, miners, and development agencies—the practice has become an assertion of native autonomy. His analysis explores the ways in which kanaimà mediates both national and international impacts on native peoples in the region and considers the significance of kanaimà for current accounts of shamanism and religious belief and for theories of war and violence.
