The insidious nature of disease taken into account, the majority of patients with chronic or malignant pancreatic disease present late in their course and even with early diagnosis, mortality rates of pancreatic cancer are high. In anticipation of a better understanding of the molecular biology and the epigenesis in the origin and progression of disease, benign and malignant as well, the most challenging items in the diagnosis and management reside at present in endoscopic and radiological pancreatic imaging. In these the diagnosis of early chronic pancreatitis, of early pancreatic cancer, the differentiation of a pancreatic mass in the setting of chronic pancreatitis and the accurate staging of potentially respectable pancreatic cancer with respect to the dorsal extension are of utmost importance. Focus in this book is on the diagnostic and imaging challenges of chronic pancreatitis and the differentiation with pancreatic cancer in an early stage.

This comprehensive teaching atlas covers virtually all pancreatic anatomy (including variants) and diseases in a pattern-based radiologic approach. Cases are presented as “unknowns”, allowing the reader to analyze the findings and learn key points. Each teaching case includes a brief clinical history, images, a description of imaging findings, differential diagnoses, final diagnosis with images of gross pathology, and a discussion of key teaching points. The presented images have been acquired with the full range of relevant modalities, including state of the art technologies such as multidetector row dual-phase CT, 3D reformatting, and multiple MRI sequences. The book will help radiologists, radiology residents and fellows to sharpen their diagnostic skills by looking at a vast array of pathology from a major tertiary hospital (Johns Hopkins) and will also assist in preparation for radiology board examinations.

Radiology Of The Pancreas written by Albert L. Baert and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

For a long time the morphologic diagnosis of diseases of the pancreas - which is the most hidden organ of the abdomen - by means of radiologic methods was inade quate. Diagnostic radiology of pancreatic diseases has been revolutionized by new cross-sectional methods such as computed tomography with volume CT scanning, further progress in ultrasonography in the form of color duplex Doppler, and magnetic resonance imaging. Therefore we had the idea of publishing an up-to-date treatise on radiology of the pancreas in order to convey the contributions made by various new imaging modalities for the diagnosis of pancreatic disorders. The editors of this volume are outstanding specialists in diagnostic radiology of the abdomen. Albert L. Baert is the author of one of the very first books on computed tomography of the body, published by Springer-Verlag in 1980. Since then he has published extensively on this method, especially as it is applied to the abdomen. He is a well-known teacher on computed tomography of the body, and especially the pancreas, and on diagnostic angiography. As a publisher he is active on the editorial boards of several radiologic journals. Guy Delorme has published extensively on the radio diagnosis of the digestive system. Moreover he has been very active as editor of French textbooks and was the chief editor of the volume dealing with the liver, biliary ducts, spleen, and pancreas in the prestigious series Traite du radiodiagnostic covering the whole field of diagnostic radiology.

This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of imaging modalities used in the diagnosis, staging, and management of pancreatic cancer. In addition to profiling the most commonly-used imaging modalities for pancreatic cancer, the text reviews recent advances in endoscopic ultrasound, staging characteristics utilized in determining appropriate treatment options, and reviews the role of imaging in pancreatic cancer screening in specialized patient populations. The book also spotlights the use of radiation therapy for pancreatic cancer in patients who cannot have surgery, as well as when fiducial marker placement should be considered in targeting a malignancy. Written by experts in the field, Imaging Diagnostics in Pancreatic Cancer: A Clinical Guide is a valuable resource for gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, and other practitioners who manage patients with pancreatic cancer.

Clinical Pancreatology Since the book Clinical Pancreatology for Practising Gastroenterologists and Surgeons was first published sixteen years ago, the knowledge and clinical management of pancreatic diseases have developed markedly. Thanks to the development of the translational research and the from bench to bedside concept, much progress from the lab has been applied to clinical practice. In addition, several highly relevant clinical trials published over the last years have resulted in the update and optimisation of clinical guidelines. A new and validated classification of severity and complications of acute pancreatitis is firmly rooted in clinical practice and has been the basis for the development of minimally invasive approaches to pancreatic necrosis. The etiopathogenic knowledge of chronic pancreatitis and other pancreatopaties, like that associated with diabetes mellitus, has developed significantly. Especially important has been the development of the field of cystic pancreatic tumours, which has been reflected in the publication of several guidelines and consensus reports over the last few years. Most research efforts have focused on pancreatic cancer, which have led and will further lead to a significant increase in the therapeutic armamentarium against this devastating disease. Finally, many newly published studies have changed the concept, causes, clinical relevance, diagnosis and treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. This new edition of Clinical Pancreatology for Practising Gastroenterologists and Surgeons has enjoyed the collaboration of the world’s leading experts in each of the areas of clinical pancreatology with the aim of facilitating gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, internists, nutritionists, diabetologists, paediatricians, radiologists, pathologists and other specialists in their decision making when facing patients with pancreatic diseases in their daily clinical practice. All in all, this book supplies an indispensable update of the relevant aspects of clinical pancreatology.

Ultrasonography (US) has long been considered an important diagnostic imaging modality for investigation of the pancreas despite certain significant and well-known limitations. Indeed, in many countries US represents the first step in the diagnostic algorithm for pancreatic pathologies. Recent years have witnessed major advances in conventional, harmonic, and Doppler imaging. New technologies, softwares, and techniques, such as volumetric imaging, enhancement quantification, and fusion imaging, are increasing the diagnostic capabilities of US. The injection of microbubble contrast agents allows better tissue characterization with definitive differentiation between solid and cystic lesions. Contrast-enhanced US improves the characterization of pancreatic tumors, assists in local and liver staging, and can offer savings in both time and money. Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging is a promising new US method to test, without manual compression, the mechanical strain properties of deep tissues. Furthermore, the applications and indications for interventional, endoscopic, and intraoperative US have undergone significant improvement and refinement. This book provides a complete overview of all these technological developments and their impact on the assessment of pancreatic pathologies. Percutaneous, endoscopic, and intraoperative US of the pancreas are discussed in detail, with precise description of findings and with informative imaging (CT and MRI) and pathologic correlations.
