The fifth meeting of the WHO Diagnostic Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (DTAG) was held in November 2022. The DTAG was established in 2019 to address gaps in NTD diagnostics through a harmonized approach for identifying and prioritizing diagnostic needs, and to inform WHO strategies and guidance on NTD diagnostics. The meeting addressed the end-to-end process of diagnostic development, including regulatory pathways, as we all as advocacy and resource mobilization, and engagement of diagnostics manufacturers and developers. The DTAG and its disease-specific and cross-cutting subgroups have supported and facilitated the development of several target product profiles for selected NTDs to address the critical diagnostic gaps.

Soil-transmitted helminthiases and human schistosomiasis remain significant public health problems in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. The WHO road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030 aims to eliminate both diseases as public health problems in all endemic countries and to eliminate transmission of human schistosomiasis in selected countries. Based on the recommendations of the WHO guideline: preventive chemotherapy to control soil-transmitted helminth infections in high-risk groups and the WHO guideline on control and elimination of human schistosomiasis, this manual aims to guide managers of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases control programmes towards the elimination of these diseases as public health problems, guided by evidence generated by effective monitoring and evaluation. It provides guidance on when to conduct an impact assessment survey, which indicators to collect, how to calculate them and interpret the results, and how to conduct the epidemiological survey.

Schistosomiasis is a major health problem in many tropical areas in the world. This neglected tropical disease is endemic in 78 countries and affects over 250 million worldwide. In 2021 the World Health Organization published the document “Ending the neglect to attain the Sustainable Development Goals: a road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021−2030”, which established as goals for schistosomiasis (i) elimination of the disease as a public health problem in 78 affected countries by 2030, and (ii) elimination of transmission in 25 endemic countries by 2030. However, to achieve these goals, it is necessary to better understand the disease and its dynamics, the parasite's immunobiology, and its relationship with the definitive and intermediate hosts. This will allow for the development of vaccines, more effective/alternative drugs, precise diagnostic methods, and improved strategies to prevent, control, and eventually even eliminate this devastating disease. Since 1987 the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz, Brazilian Ministry of Health) has organized the International Symposium on Schistosomiasis on a biennial basis. Historically, this symposium brings together approximately 350 people, accounting for world-renowned scientists, public health managers, students, and policymakers, to translate the knowledge generated in research institutions into actions and tools to improve the quality of life of the population affected by schistosomiasis. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium had to be postponed. In order to continue the discussion on schistosomiasis in these difficult times, the organizing committee of the event launched a Pre-conference Research topic (Pre-Conference Research Topic: 16th International Symposium on Schistosomiasis) where scientists could share their latest discoveries with the community. With the advent of vaccines and other public health strategies implemented across the globe, we are pleased to announce that The 16th edition of the International Symposium on Schistosomiasis will be held in person between 21 and 23 November 2022, in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We would like to invite our colleagues that intend to attend the Symposium to submit their contributions. In addition, submissions from scientists that would not be able to join us in Ouro Preto in November are also welcome.

Biosafety And Biosecurity written by Jonathan Jaime G. Guerrero and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

There are many guidelines, protocols and advisories that outline how biosafety and biosecurity can be adopted by institutions around the world. Whilst helpful, many of these are tailored to affluent Western nations. This leaves developing nations far behind since their laboratories and institutions are resource-scarce and biosafety and biosecurity are not mainstreamed entirely among the different laboratory workers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and academics. Biosafety and Biosecurity: Practical Insights and Applications for Low and Middle-Income Countries aims to bridge this gap by comprehensively summarizing the state and development of biosafety and biosecurity in developing and developed nations in a comparative analysis. This book includes basic concepts and principles of biosafety and biosecurity, including certification and legal frameworks, both international and local, and biosafety and biosecurity across disciplines including environmental, medical, and special topics that are relevant to countries with comparable conditions. This proposed book solves the problem of the lack of a prescribed professional title that comprehensively summarizes the state and development of biosafety and biosecurity throughout the world, allowing the reader a 360 view of the subject area. This book will appeal to a global audience of biorisk officers, health and safety professionals and specialists in the life sciences, health and allied fields, environmental science, engineering, and plant and animal agriculture.

Global Report On Neglected Tropical Diseases 2023 written by World Health Organization and has been published by World Health Organization this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-30 with Medical categories.

The Global report on neglected tropical diseases 2023 provides a consolidated, up-to-date assessment of progress towards control, elimination and eradication of 20 diseases and disease groups (NTDs) globally, regionally and nationally. Progress is reported in the context of global commitments, strategies and targets set in the NTD road map 2021-2030. The document covers the first two years of implementation of the road map (2021 and 2022). The information presented is based primarily on epidemiological and programmatic data for interventions conducted in 2021 and gathered in 2022, but the report also describes a wide range of activities and accomplishments that were registered in both 2021 and 2022; comparisons are often made against 2020 and 2019 data, especially with regard to COVID-19 disruptions. It has four sections: Section 1 is an introduction. Section 2 presents the status of the global NTD response. Section 3 charts progress and developments against the three road map pillars. Section 4 sets out priority actions for 2023 and beyond to sustain implementation of the road map and its companion documents. Five annexes to the report provide information for 2021–2022 on regional progress (Annex 1), Weekly Epidemiology Record articles on NTDs (Annex 2), progress and challenges by disease (Annex 3), diagnostic target product profiles (Annex 4) and the status of commitments for donated medicines and health products (Annex 5).
