The Neurologic Diagnosis written by Jack N. Alpert and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-27 with Medical categories.

An introductory text that transitions into a moderately advanced, case-based analysis of neurologic disorders and diseases, this book emphasizes how to simplify the process of making a neurologic diagnosis. Medical students and residents are often intimidated by a deluge of data, perception of anatomic complexity, extensive differential diagnoses, and often have no organized structure to follow. Diagnostic methods of general medicine are not applicable. Indeed, neurology is a unique specialty since it requires the intermediary step of an anatomic diagnosis prior to proffering a differential diagnosis. Yet the required knowledge of neuroanatomy need not be profound for the student or resident who will not specialize in neurology or neurosurgery. The Neurologic Diagnosis: A Practical Bedside Approach, 2nd Edition is primarily directed to neurology and neurosurgery residents but it will be useful for medical and family practice residents who will discover that a great percentage of their patients have neurologic symptoms. A one-month neurology rotation out of four years of medical school is not sufficient to make a cogent neurologic diagnosis. The aim of this concise, practical book -- which includes an in-depth video of how to perform a neurologic examination -- is to facilitate the process of establishing a neuroanatomic diagnosis followed by a rigorous analysis of symptoms and signs to reach a well-thought out differential diagnosis. Focused and succinct, this book is an invaluable resource for making a lucid neurologic diagnosis.

In writing this book, I have attempted to provide information about the relative value of particular investigations in various neurological disorders. The book is divided into sections dealing with the methods of investigation, the investigation of particular symptoms, the investigation of specific neurological conditions and neurological emergencies. Finally, the assessment of certain disorders suggesting a particular anatomical localization, for example isolated optic atro phy, is considered. Following an appraisal of the literature, each section ends with a recommendation regarding appropriate investigation. In some in stances this is supported by an algorithm. Specific recommendations have been attempted despite the risk of producing over-dogmatic criteria for patient management. A small amount of illustrative material is included. I am grateful to colleagues at Charing Cross Hospital who have provided some of the illustrations. Figs 1. 4, 2. 1 and 10. 2 are reproduced from Atlas of Clinical Neurology, by G. D. The Neurologic Examination: Scientific Basis for Clinical Diagnosis provides a bridge from basic neuroscience such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology to clinical symptomatology. Neurologic examinations provide the foundation for diagnosis, and only after a thorough and expertly executed examination can one begin to incorporate laboratory testing and treatment. In contrast with most of the previously published books of clinical neurology which are disease- or anatomy-oriented, this book is organized in terms of functional anatomy of the nervous system. Correct interpretation of symptoms and signs based on modern scientific knowledge is of utmost importance in the diagnosis of neurological diseases. For this purpose, the importance of careful history-taking and physical examination is emphasized, and chapters are arranged in the order of actual steps of neurologic examination. In this new editions, the authors have updated all materials included within. With up-to-date references, new boxes to discuss specific topics of modern interest, and additional chapters and figures, this second edition of The Neurologic Examination: Scientific Basis for Clinical Diagnosis is crucial to neurologists, neurosurgeons, clinicians, and technicians.
